Re: Help me please! Evinrude motor

Where do I connect the compression tester and what would qualify as a "good reading"? Also do I measure when I am reving the engine, since a test while idling isn't really an option?

It goes in place of spark plug. Test just cranking or pulling start cord.

Re: Help me please! Evinrude motor

yeah, remove spark plugs (both)
and thread it into one of the spark plug holes.
Then start pulling the rope.

Gauges are not 100% accurate.

Most of my 60's motors, when I test them I get 70ish PSI.

Really, what your looking for is for them to be even.

one cylinder you could get 80, the other 79.this is ok,
you get problems when one cylinder is 80, and the other is 30.

And look for a compression of at least 100 in both?

if that engine has only seen 2 hours of use, and has been stored in a clean room, you might see 100 psi.

After you get it running decently, you can do a decarb/seafoam, that should fix things up.

usually you wont start seeing at least 100 psi until you get into 80's motors.
Compression seems to go up through the years.

Example:
readings taken from extremely low hour motors
1973 4hp - 95 psi
1984 4hp - 125 psi

1969 6hp 80 PSI
1977 6hp 100 PSI
1992 6hp 130 PSI

Where did you get these numbers from?

btw, that engine looks WAY too big for that boat. As in unsafe big. What hp is the boat rated for? And 60's engines run great, don't worry about the age, and they're easy to work on.

Re: Help me please! Evinrude motor

Great, heres a new obstacle in the mix...the guy I got it from got it from the guy that the boat is still registered to. He never got it registered through Virginia, he just went and got a 30day temp. title from Walmart. He gave me the original owner's registration, and I am new to the boating world so I didn't know that the boat had a separate title. I am now filling out the application to get it registered/titled in my name and it says that I need to send in the title with the application. Now I don't know what to do. I am going to call the state tomorrow to see if I actually need the title, not just the registration and explain the circumstances and see what they say..

For the title, good luck.

you have the owners info? Send him a letter?

Where did you get these numbers from?

The 4's are mine.
2 of the 6's are mine.
the newer 6 my friend has.

All taken with the same gauge.

Re: Help me please! Evinrude motor

Quick question, I just noticed that this motor came with no propeller nut, as in the propeller was just held in by the drive pin. When the pin broke the propeller did not fly off into the water. So do I really need to go to the hardware store and find a nut that will fit on, or is it fine without it?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that is not possible. If you put it in forward with no prop nut your prop would immediately fall off. You can't just buy a nut at a hardware store. See the little hole on the shaft that the prop slides over? That is for a cotter pin to go through the prop nut.

When I got it, it has a drive pin in that big hole, and nothing in the little hole and no nut.

Oh Man..That's the first look at the prop close up too..Your going to nee a new one. But get that compression checked out first to see if it's worth it. Good luck...

Re: Help me please! Evinrude motor

1. This will be fine if I just put a new drive pin in, propeller isn't going to fall off right? (it didnt when I used it briefly on the lake the other day) ...what if I just put a cotter pin through that little hole?

2. Would a new propeller really net that much of a performance increase?

Re: Help me please! Evinrude motor

The parts diagram shows the prop nut, so I am going to say you should order one. Just seems like all that would be holding the pin in otherwise is the weight of the prop?

Re: Help me please! Evinrude motor

Does anyone know where I can find a new propeller for this if I decide to get one? The part number is 0378581, but according to marineengine.com that part has been discontinued and replaced by part OMC0385955, but I cannot find this part anywhere either.

Try sea-way.com in Seattle for the OE prop.

Michigan Wheel lists for your motor - part #012023.

Re: Help me please! Evinrude motor

One more thing, does the Propeller Nut hold the Drive Pin in?

As in a drive pin will not stay in on its own, it gets covered and held in by the Propeller Nut?

I don't know what was being used as a drive pin before, because it broke off and fell into the water, but it certainly wasn't covered by a propeller nut. It was just put through the holes in the shaft and the holes in the propeller itself. I am so confused

And wouldn't a cotter pin suffice for holding the propeller on?

No.
You need the shear pin, cotter pin for prop nut and prop nut.
The attached picture from the Takoma link shows a hubbed & splined prop (probably wrong picture), your prop is not a splined prop. Based on the picture you posted, you need a new prop. You might find a composite prop that cost less, some have replaceable blades too.
