Help me please! Evinrude motor

Hello guys, I am new to the boating world and purchased my first jon boat yesterday. I got it used and it came with what the owner told me was a 1989 Evinrude 28hp 2-stroke outboard. I took it out for the first time today and it took a whole lot of pulling to get this thing started. It had fresh 93 octane fuel and 3 oz. per gallon of 2-stroke motor oil. I hit a rock (or something) and broke what another boater told me was the shearing pin, and the propeller would no longer spin. I need to know which part to replace this with, I've looked all over the internet but can't find out what size shearing pin I need (or where to buy them) I also do not know if this is truly a 1989 motor, it looks pretty old. Also, when I finally did get it running it would stall after a few seconds if I took my hand off the throttle all the way. Included are a few pictures of the engine. Thanks in advance for any help!

wow definitely not an 89, that looks like a vintage 1960s "speedy twin." I don't know much about them but I think thats what it is.

Get the model no and serial no off the transom clamp, and then head to your nearest Johnson/Evinrude dealer and get the correct drive pin. It would be a very good idea to take the propeller to a prop shop (or your nearest Johnson/Evinrude dealer) to have it checked to find out if the hub in it has spun. If the dealer doesn't do props they can direct you to the shop that they use.

One thing to remember is that a boat is a hole in the water into which you throw money.

Re: Help me please! Evinrude motor

Your going to have to locate the motor tag. This will give you a model number, serial number. Looking this up here under parts will give you the year of the motor. From there, you should able to locate the shear pin.
The shear pin is designed to break off when the prop hits obstruction, so the prop, and motor shaft dont take the damage. The prop will usually get dinged up anyway, depends on what you hit.
List motor tag info hear. A lot of very knowlegable people on hear.
I take it you removed the prop. dont see it in the photo.

Serial No: 03169

Damn I wish I had known how old this was going into it...i can't believe a 1960's motor can even still run, I am only familiar with car engines and a 69 car motor still running is something to marvel at. If I wanted to sell this motor what could I get for it? 300-400?

did you buy it expecting it to be a newer engine?

Good running condition you might get $200

Yea the guy told me he thought it was a 1989. I would never have bought a 1963 motor.

Re: Help me please! Evinrude motor

call him, get your money back.

how much was it?

keep in mind, you can probably get that engine running just fine.

an 80's 30hp would probably run you $800+

Oh, its a 1962 28hp by the way

Re: Help me please! Evinrude motor

It was a craigslist deal, I'm pretty sure its "buyer beware" unless I take him to court which I am not willing to pay for. I got the 14" jon boat, trailer, and this engine for $1000. bad deal?

Re: Help me please! Evinrude motor

more than I would have paid.

Small claims court is only $25!

call him and tell him you want $500 back. or the full $1000 w/ return of the boat.

'buyer beware' only really applys to drugs. He told you one thing, which was a lie. Although, he could pull the 'I didn't know!' thing, bu I dont think that matter.

Is the ad still on craigslist? if so, print it out.

also, on the title, did you put in the correct selling price?
or did you try to save some tax money and put $50?

Re: Help me please! Evinrude motor

All the craigslist ad said was "28hp evinrude" it did not specify a year. But over the phone he told me he thought it was a 1989.

Re: Help me please! Evinrude motor

eh well.

you have any tools? Feel like fixing the engine up a bit?

Do a compression check.
Check for spark.
Check the lower unit oil
service the water pump
clean the points
and clean the carb.

Should run fine.

that engine looks WAY to big for the boat.
The boat should have a tag on it that says "MAX HP" might wanna check that out.
also, where is your prop?

Maybe the boat is an '89.
No hub in that prop.

Re: Help me please! Evinrude motor

I wouldn't know how to do any of these things and I assume it would cost big bucks at a marine shop. The propeller is sitting on my desk, just took it off.

Big bucks and boats go together.
Just tap the sheared pin out with a drift punch and install the new one.

Re: Help me please! Evinrude motor

Well I guess I am stuck with this old motor, could anyone direct me to the shear pin that I need for this? Perhaps a website to order from? Thank you all for your help.

Re: Help me please! Evinrude motor

parts manual is here

Do yourself a favor and print out all 20 pages, and staple it together.

Drive pin is evinrude #0304575
you can order it at boats.net
Price: $2.49
or get a piece of stainless steal rod, and cut & make your own.

A marine shop probably wont touch it. if they would, it would cost too much.
if you know how to work on a car even a little, this is quite a simple engine.

Common maintenance parts, part numbers:

Coils: 0584477
Tune up kit: 0172523 (breaker points, and condensers)
Just the points are # 0580148
Fuel pump rebuild kit: 0379777
water pump kit # 0379774
carb # 0439074

I looked these numbers up in my evinrude book.

First, lets do a compression test:

All you need is a $10 compression gauge for this.
Remove the spark plugs,
Screw in gauge
pull pull-starter nice and good about 7 times.
check gauge reading.
repeat to other cylinder(s)

then, awakening a sleeping outboard:

Thanks so much man, this helps me so much, I am now excited about learning the motor and trying to replace some things myself. One more quick question - about the stalling while idling, any idea how to fix that?

Re: Help me please! Evinrude motor

From the pictures I'd say the "deal" was a bit overpriced, but I'd try to live with it as the engine ran... did it run well, and lots of power? That is a very big engine, 28 hp, for such a small boat - I'd as a 9.9 or 15 HP would be just fine for that boat.. not suggesting changing anything now. I don't think that looks like a 28 hp either... but so what you'll burn less gas with a smaller engine. I assume you'll be fishing or touring, not trying to water ski:cool:

I think the way small claims works is if you win, good luck collecting. The ruling doesn't have any "teeth" or enforcement. It assume people of good faith.. so if they are all of good faith why are we in small claims? I guess there are cases where there is a disagreement and the court decision will result in adherence to the ruling.

I'm not a lawyer, so you can trust me:D even though I don't know a thing about what I speak:confused:

Re: Help me please! Evinrude motor

Like I said, the FIRST thing you wanna do before sinking money into the engine is to do a compression check.

This will tell you the condition of the inner workings of the engine.
if its good, anything else can be fixed.

Your idle could be caused by a number of things
1) Low or uneven compression
2) Worn or dirty ignition system.
3) Dirty or clogged carburetor.
4) Failing fuel lines/pump/tank.
etc etc etc...

Also, if you dont mind bad spelling by a (probably) dyslexic person,
you can go read my 6hp rebuild site:

http://www.bigb9k.com/BRP/6603e/

start from "PART I - Disassemble * Powerhead Removal"
and read it, and next your way through it.
Its for a smaller engine, but its the same process on your engine.
It'll help you understand a lot I think.
Also, that engine is a 1966 that is used daily (well, have for the past 2 months anyway)

The Reconstruction of that engine cost me about $350.
Would have cost only $150 to completely go through if I didn't pay for sand blasting and order $75+ in paint.
