Thanks a heap Jimmbo these are two great pieces of info for me. I'll drill some holes from the inside sometime this week and let you know. Any particular part where it's most likely to be failing? The area in the upper corner you circled in blue? Or just do a few in different places and hope for the best? I'd love to get it on the water with the original motor. If the transom checks out I'll start to play with the motor and all going well do the interior up 60s style. It's a great looking old boat to me but Im a weirdo when it comes to things from that era.

Your are in for a project if you want a safe boat.
I have done several transom repairs and the only way to do it right is to do it all. Spot repairing is not really an option. The transom needs to be all one pice and joined with the hull as well. You will likely fine damage to the stringers in the floor as well. It would take for ever to type the methods I have used in the past and no job is quite the same.
