Hey everyone,

I Have a 86 welcraft with 170 hp motor with mercruiser alpha one outdrive. I noticed some oil leaking from the drive. It was dripping down onto the shifting lever that goes down to the lower unit . disconected the lower unit from the upper and found that the oil was leaking from where the drive shaft slides up into the upper part of the outdrive. I would like to know what seals the oil in the upper part of the oudrive. Could the O ring that goes on the lower shaft being warn cause the uper part to leak down. Or is the upper part be sealed completly where the shaft slides in to it .. I am not extreemly farmiliar with this outdrive .. so be nice ... THAnks

The lower unit oil runs through the lower unit as well as the upper unit. I am not sure exactly where it is leaking, did you take your lower unit off? Before removing the lower unit, you should drain the lower unit oil. On that outdrive, to fill it up again, it should take no more than 2 quarts.

Re: help!! leaking outdrive

Yes It was leaking before i took the outdrive apart. And i did drain out the fluid befor i took the lower unit off of the top. But the leak before i took the oudrive apart was coming from where the lower unit shaft slides into the uper unit. Does anyone know what seals this conection. I belive theres a seal underneath the gears. any ideas ?

How hard is it to replace the oil seals on the shaft? I take it that all the gears need to be removed? What special tools are required to pull the gears out ? How long would it take to replace the seals?
