wheel bearing part).jpgMy wheel bearings burst on my trailor. I purchased a 1 1-16 wheel bearings to replace the old ones, however when I tried to install the wheel hub it would not fit over this part. I can remove the part, but I don't know if it is required for my new wheel bearing assembly or if it was apart of the old one. If it is needed, how can I determine the proper inner wheel bearing size and seal to fit over this part. Thanks in advance!

Thats part of the old bearing and should be removed before installing your new bearings/hub. Good luck!

How are you going to keep the castle nut on? The threads are pretty much shot. I think you are due for a new axle.

Yep, has to be removed. LOL. I need to watch my wording when I type. Thalasso is right about the threads on the axle. They do look to be in bad shape.

Better look closer but to me there looks to be parts from both the inner and outer bearing still on that shaft.

Re: Help identifing a part on my axle

I go along with the new axle suggestion. Why? The piece that looks like the rear bearing race is the rear seal surface. It is beat up badly and is likely the reason the bearings failed in the first place. A 1-1/16 inner and outer bearing are the same size so what may look like the race is really the seal surface. Can't be positive without better pictures.

Re: Help identifing a part on my axle

I just went through the same crap. Bought my used boat and just made it home before the wheel came off. That part will slide off with a little mallet work. Take a look at the bottom of the spindle, the long part the bearings ride on. If you can feel any edges you might as well replace the entire axel. Mine was destroyed from the ten mile drive. Your problem will be finding an axel that is the same length and has the connector for your leaf springs to attach at the same spot. I had one custom built to match the old, found the guy through a local boat parts place. Good luck, sucks to have trailer issues.

I agree it looks pretty rough. Clean all the grease off and take another picture. Also to get the race off you can grind a slot in it carefully ( do not grind into the spindle) and use a chisel and hammer to crack it. It will come right off.

You'll be fine with a some surgery (removing the race & filing/sanding the spindle smooth), speedi sleeve (for the seal surface), and a Die to clean up the threads. I've resurrected worse.

I'd take a drift and a mallet and just work it off hitting around the race (too easy to damage it with a grinder). I agree with spdracr39, clean it off real good and take and post another picture. I'll bet the threads are fine under all that grease.

Take the hub off of the other side. Compare from side to side and I think you'll find that the surface for the inner seal is gone, and the remains of the inner race is welded to the spindle. Even if you got the old races off,the spindle is probably junk.

Re: Help identifing a part on my axle

that is the inner bearing that he asking about, unless he flipped it over. the bevel where the seal goes is worn from contact with the hub when the bearing went out. how is the backside of the hub that holds the seal? bet it's pooched. threads do look fine, but definitly clean all grass off. not sure about cleaning up that sealing surfacg though. also the face the inner bearing seats against may be missing.

Re: Help identifing a part on my axle

Thanks everyone for your input. I decided to replace both spindles and have new axles put on my trailor.
