I doubt it was a Kit. Thousands of small boat builders pop up everywhere, and California was/is no exception. Unfortunately most go out of business in a few years, and a lot don't leave much History behind

Using the HINDecoder website, here is the info on the boat and company (which is out of business). . . .
--------------------------------------------------------------
GAE03223M81L is of the standard HIN type called Model-Year HIN.

GAE = Galaxie Boats Of California (Out of Business)
03223 = Boat Serial Number
M = HIN format is Model-Year. Always has M at position nine (1972-1984)
81L = Production date July 1981

HIN Decoder Details for GAE03223M81L:

Our HULL ID Decoder breaks down the Hull identification number into the following information:
The HIN or CIN you have entered meets the Model-Year HIN format. It might also be a type that contains the country code and thus the boat comes from USA or Other . The serial number of the HIN is 03223 and is set by the boat builder. This boat or vessel has a Certification Date of (1981) and a Model Year of 1981 with month of build (July) based on the formatting of your hull_identification_number (HIN) .

The manufacturer identification code (MIC) of your craft identification number (CIN or HIN) is GAE. This MIC (GAE) stands for the company name Galaxie Boats Of California which is currently Out of Business. This boat manufacturer has other company names (GAE sometimes goes by these name(s) T C Allen Inc, N & N Marine Inc (oob), Galaxie Boats Inc (oob), or ). This could happen if the US Coast Guard reissued the MIC to a new company after one went out of business.

This company (Galaxie Boats Of California) is owned by Jim Earnhardt and is located at 4869 Mcgrath St, Ste 110 in Ventura state of CA. It manufactured this vessel and placed your HIN or CIN on the hull. This Boat maker is not owned by a parent company. Galaxie Boats Of California has started making boats, yachts and other watercraft as of 8/11/1998 and went out of business on (1/6/2005) in the following country: USA.

The Model Name is uncertain for this Galaxie Boats Of California (GAE03223M81L). But we have approximations: 3050 or GALAXIE or Pleasure or GAE or 185 BOWRIDER
-----------------------------------------------
You can also separately check the US Coast Guard MIC database for more specific information on the company. (using GAE as the MIC code) https://uscgboating.org/content/manufacturers-identification.php

Is it a jet drive inboard or does it need an engine? The Olds 455CID/Berkeley Jet combo was a popular motor back in that day.

Obviously check it for rot, especially the deck.

I have an Avenger from the mid-70s, which is pretty similar.

You should have received paperwork with the boat to transfer ownership to you or a parent/legal guardian. Depending on the state this may be a title for boat and trailer OR may be transferable registration. Either way, without the ability to register the boat in your name I wouldn't sink a single penny into it until ownership is straightened out.

OK A question for a powerplant. What was the performance of a 455 Olds with a Berkeley jet in the 80s. I never heard about a win in any race. Of course, I have not followed the races.

My Avenger, which was a typical boat built in Ca in the seventies and eighties can cruise at 60+MPH (150HP) on a calm sea. Wifely actually layed out on the reclining seat as I cruised at 50+ MPH. It was one of those rare days with rollers in the bay and lots of space between then.

Nice piece of historical research, and time spent to help a young boater Mr. T Penfield. Very impressive and especially for a guy with your apparent financial status. I do enjoy your responses although you are well above my boating league and as a result your answers don't fit my low end boating lifestyle...but I read them anyway....you and a handful of other resourceful participants on this forum. No doubt you will have impressed this young lad and surely activate his enthusiasm for the sport.

I was not aware that I had an apparent financial status. :unsure: Please share that with my Admiral, as she is constantly reminding me of our poverty. :LOL:

I do enjoy helping folks on this site, as I am helped by many. I often take an interest in researching the lesser know boat companies, because in total there are about 4,000 in this country (USA) and about 400 of them go out of business every year. We all hear the big names in boating, and not much about the lesser known names.

Ever hear of Hallett Boats? They had some nice mid-cabin bowriders before bowriders with cabins became a thing.

I think the Old 455 was over rated as being a good Engine for a Jet Drive. Jets like RPMs and the Old is a little Lethargic, at high Rpm, even in its higher performance versions. A Buick 455 would have been a better choice, but for some reason the OIds got the nod. Maybe because it was used as an Industrial Engine, in small Powerplants and Pumping Stations.
