I'm a complete newbie. Never owned a boat. Took the plunge and bought a 1988 Chris Craft Scorpion at the end of last year. The boat runs well and the interior looks good for it's age.
Now I'm trying to arrange for insurance so that I can put it in the marina.
The boat has a what appears to be a factory swim platform as all the pictures I see online have the same one. My boat mechanic said he cannot find the HIN because it's blocked by the swim platform. Is it true?
Can someone tell me where the HIN may be located on the hull?
Thank you.

Bondo. thanks for the reply.
I'm in Canada. And unfortunately, the HIN is not on the registration. When I changed ownership, the form that I needed to fill out asks for the HIN but leaves it optional. My understanding is that some of the older boats don't have a HIN. So I managed to register it under my name without it.
I need help finding it on the boat physically. Is it like my mechanic said it's behind the swim platform? He really doesn't want to take the swim platform off. Is there an alternate location?

The HIN is on the upper stbd side of the transom. If the swim platform was OEM it should be there. If it was installed after-market, shame on the guy who mounted it because he obliterated it for future needs.

Forget your mechanic - he's not interested in helping you. Go out and look for yourself. Your boat may be old, but it was built after HINs were required.

If the hull was painted, you may have to scrape some paint off, now that you know where to look.

Thank you, Jim. I will try to twist the mechanic's arm a bit.

some manufacturers put the hin in several locations.

Look inside the boat on the transom, and under the dash near the steering wheel

I think the requirement was/ is to put the HIN in 2 places. One hidden, and one in the standard spot on the transom.

Only one of my boats is new enough to have a HIN, and it's my parts boat. I found a tag under the dash with the HIN while ripping out the cluster and controls

how are the stringers on your 34 year old boat/

HIN should be on the starboard transom, just above and to the right of the outdrive

All good info. Thanks everyone for helping out a newbie.

The boat is well maintain and the floor seems to be solid. Even the seats have original covers on them that are not faded or ripped.

I will be going to the mechanic to see the boat this coming Saturday. Hopefully I can find the HIN.
