Re: HELP! buying my fist 89 bayliner capri

My price range is really low but i feel i can get something nice for 2k possibly even 2500 if its a good deal.

What ever you buy in that price range I'm sure we'll be seeing you around here in the restoration forum because they're all going to need work.

In your price range your best bet is to buy a cheap ($500 or less) rotter and do a full restore, then you get a pratically new boat that's in your price range... $500 for the boat and $1500-$2000 to fix it up.

Oh, And try & stay away from anything with the 470 merc in it or anything OMC. - Just getting harder to get support on that stuff.

Like I said, get out & start handling some boats & looking thru them, getting your hands into all the dark spaces..........

sounds fishy I was told the same thing when i got my bayliner. mine evan looked nicer then that bayliner from the craigslist pics.
got it home then holy crap - check out my thread!
2 years later and 5 grand put in her i finally got a good boat.....
I would say buy a newer boat or plan on a restor if you want a nice boat....

The newbs just don't understand you can't get a good, reliable, cheap, used fiberglass boat... all they see is that cheap price and the lipstick someone put on a pig.

Good advice. Yamaha inboard outboards too. They only made them for a couple of years and stopped making them and supporting them cold. Yamaha "Outboards" are fine. Excellent engines and still fully suppoerted.

Ok guys i found another little boat around my price range... Its a 79 glastron with a 75hp johnson
Il post the add i found on C.L
1979 Glastron Boat Johnson Motor - $1900 (Kenosha)

Better than the B'liner, but still risky... but they'll all be risky in your price range.

I like the garage storage description, you should go see this boat tomorrow... if it's still there there.

Call him now.

Unfortunantly i dont have much to spend on a boat as some of you guys do. Im sure you eat sleep drink fishing/boating.
But yes i will be contacting him i already spoke with him thru email and he said he will get the impeller replaced sinve he hasnt ran the noat since 09.
Yes heated storage is a huge plus.

I wasn't making fun of your price range, my first boat was a $400 tinny that leaked like a sieve.

It's just that older fiberglass boats are a crap shoot when you buy one and most of the time the dice come up snake eyes. The Glasstron sounds like it may be a decent boat, which is rare for a 'glass boat that age.

That glastron looks a lot nicer, inside storage is great but look in every nook & cranny, dont fall in love too quick.

Re: HELP! buying my fist 89 bayliner capri

I don't have much money to spend either, that's why there are so many projects & no running rigs in my derelict fleet. Work changes & more importantly income changes will hopefully allow that to change in the coming season. Enough about me...

Buying a project boat, or any older boat, will do 2 things:
1. Allow you to work on it as money & time allow. I often have time & no money, or money & no time....
2. Likely REQUIRE a delayed gratification of using the boat, now or eventually, as no matter it's appearance, they are old boats & often need frequent repairs.

The guy I spent so much of my youth w/ boating, frequently said: As soon as I can afford a NEW boat, I'm buying one. I hate spending 1/2 or more of my lake trip getting XYZ repaired, removed, replaced, etc.... We spent countless weekends working on an Avanti OB fish & ski, at the lake & towed home. He had a 1960's Marinette fireball inboard cabin cruiser that we spent even more time working on in his slip. Much of that time I wouldn't trade for anything. But yeah, once he could, he bought a really nice bow-rider V8 I/O that was much more fun for him to own & us to enjoy.

If the Glastron proves to be as nice a boat as it appears, it may be the 1 in 1000 (maybe more) that is in as good a shape as you could ever hope for, and might possibly be worth the asking. The pix in the ad don't immediately have any indications that it isn't in GREAT shape.

For the record, I probably don't have $2k total in all the boats, motors & trailers. Less if you include the few things I've sold, and A LOT less if my boss still buys my 1st Jet for a hunting/fishing rig for what I have in it. That's including titles & registrations.

Budget what you can afford, and make sure you keep $500 in reserve (more would be better) in an oh carp fund...

4 year old gas and 2 stroke oil.

4 year old fuel filter needs replacing.

Gummed up carbs from sitting so long need to be rebuilt.

Fuel pump replacement.

I wouldn't trust the motor to take it very far from the dock until the carbs were rebuilt and the fuel pump was replaced.

Change lower unit fluid and check for a milky color and metal shavings.
