I have filled my manifolds with water and heated them with a torch, no signs of water leaking into exhaust ports. Is the an effective test are am I missing something?

Ayuh,... Yer missing something....

The Only reliable Test for those batwing manifolds is the dockside "Float Test"....
Carry 'em down to the dock, 'n Toss 'em as far out as you can....

If they Float, you can use 'em....

Otherwise, go find a conversion kit, 'n install it, Before those manifolds cost you the Motor....

Well, you proved the torch works. :D

Try this instead: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=288629

Yeah, you can do the acetone test.

That may tell you that they're not leaking right now.

Because a thin wall can start leaking at any time, it won't tell you if they're going to start leaking tomorrow or next week when you park the boat for a month etc.......(and they allow salt water to run into an open exhaust valve AND SIT THERE FOR ANOTHER COUPLE WEEKS)

Take Bondo's advice. replace them with a 2 piece kit.

Re: heat test for one piece manifolds

I realize these manifolds are not dependable, however I am trying to determine if they are leaking RIGHT NOW. I have a new Jasper rebuild and I am trying to determine if I have manifold issues or Jasper issues, ( crack block, head , or leaking gaskets) very small leak and I am going crazy trying to find it. I do not want to start pulling heads and doing heavy stuff on a good running engine till I know where to go. thx for all the input.

Ayuh,... So give those manifolds the "Float Test", 'n Pressure Test the Block....

Ok , I gather you don't like these manifolds. Any info on pressure testing block would be helpful, correct me if I am mistaken , if I block off my water lines going to the manifolds, I then would tap into my block where the water coming off the pickup pump going into thermostat?

If I pressure test the block , how is that going to distingush between a crack and a bad head gasket/intake gasket, if the pressure leaks off , it could be either one??

Ayuh,... I've seen the damage those things cause...

Yer pressure test sounds about right,..
With the block drained, 'n pressurized, the sparkplugs out, the oil cap off, etc...
You'll Hear the leak,... Follow the Sound...

still not sure how this is going to determine what is leaking, i guess if anything it will get me in the generally vicinity.

thanks again for all the info!

Re: heat test for one piece manifolds

ok , i have pressure tested the block, put in 18psi, in 24 hours only lost 2 pounds. not the obivous result I was hopeing for, what is my next option, I am considering intake manifold gasket and new exhaust manifolds. If that does not work, head gasket and complete head test at head shop.
