head gasket set ?

i am replacing 470 head gasket -- i was told mercruiser only ? or is sierra ok to use ? i guess i am a lil confused i assumed sierra was good in their parts . so if it is merc only where does one get a set reasonably priced . thanks i boats

The car hot rod guys that use the 470 engine in race cars recommend the OEM Mercruiser gasket. As I understand it, the Mercruiser gasket is made specifically for this application. I think the OEM head gasket has some extra silicone sealing strips not found on the aftermarket gaskets. IMHO spend the extra $30 and go OEM. All the other gaskets, Sierra is fine.

If you are a boat owner and have been for any length of time, then your last sentence is a bogus question....we boaters know that there is no such thing as a reasonably priced anything that pertains to boating!!! (LOL) Just the least expensive.................

I just finished a complete rebuild on 2- 470's, i used the aftermarket gaskets on both heads... I dont see any issue with them at all.
I also went with the overhaul kits... Maybe if i ordered each gasket separately i would go OEM.. Who knows..
I suppose if you like to spend money and feel special, get the OEM.

For all the 470 guys, this is a fun read. They talk about head gaskets in post #38. They were using a 470 engine to set a LAND SPEED RECORD
