I read in a post a while back that there is a spray that can be put into the dead pistons that seals the rings to tell if the problem is rings or head gasket. Does this sound familiar to someone? Can anybody share this proceedure with me?

motor oil will do just a couple squirts then check compression, if the reading goes up from the dry test its rings or scored cylinder, if not pull the head and check the gasket

replace the head gasket for 30 bucks and compresion test it again. or just pull one plug at a time and c witch cylinder throws water out.must be in the water though.

It depends on the motor. If 1 cylinder is low then it's possible the rings are carboned.2 pistons next to each other indicate a bad head gasket. Then thats's not always true either.
I had a 85hp that had 150# of comp on all three and still had a blown gasket.
Not all motors will react the same.
Look at your plugs and then do a compression test.J
