Plywoody - your thinking is still back with the pre 9/11 days. In the post 9/11 mode of warfare - we are fighting an enemy that has no fear of retaliation, no sense of fairness & reason and does not need large armed forces to carry out their terror attacks against the innocent people they target. We are now in a situation where pre-emptive attacks are vital for the survival of our society. The only way to stop a terrorist is to take him out before he takes you out.<br /><br />SCO - Thanks for your comments - particularly regarding the suggestion of ulterior motives and oil etc - very good point. <br /><br />DJohns - I agree, you can't trust or rely on the UN any more. As you and I have said before in various ways - the UN is past it's use-by date and needs replacing by a new organisation with a more realistic attitude towards world security.

Since you encouraged me Kiwi, I'll add one more thing. It's an obvious observation, that many here on this board, and most Americans(per polls) feel the hair on the backs of their necks raised. We know we are in a scrape, we recognize our vulnerability, and are compelled to meet the threat. Those that don't sense this for whatever reason find some sort of conspiracy to explain it all.

So, I guess in the post 9/11 world, we are authorized to attack pretty much anyone we want to. Interesting. And that is going to make us safer. Also interesting.<br />I guess we will have to agree to disagree on this one.<br />And hope you are right, and not me.

That pretty much sums it up Ply. I think though that the constitution gives us the authorization. We've always had it. It is our Presidents duty in fact when necessary to protect this country. There is no provision for taking a world leader poll, because our best interests and theirs do not necessarily overlap. <br />I acknowledge your point that what is important is to take the best course of action or inaction that will result in the greatest safety of us citizens. We're in agreement there, but our perceptions have us at odds on how to get there. I'm either too paranoid, or you're not paranoid enough me thinks.
