Coil Bind CONFIRMED!
I pulled a valve cover today and found my 4th broken rocker stud!
This was w/ the stamped rockers so it had nothing to do with the roller rockers I was suspecting.
I bumped the engine over till one of the intake valves was fully opened and sure enough the spring looks like the coils are touching each other......pics to follow.

Another interesting event......when I was assembling my rebuild I noticed the valve stems on the intake valves were not protruding out of the retainers enough........see pic below.

I brought the heads back to the machine shop and he admitted there was an error......kinda complimented me on finding the issue.. Not sure what he did to rectify the problem but I don't think it was a complete fix. All the studs that broke on this engine were on intake valves.

Not going to bother going back to this shop........plan on modifying the heads myself.

I do remember that and you having to bring them back. It sounds like they used springs that they had, but they might have not been right for the cam that you had. I wonder if they had assembled the whole engine would they have checked for this....the exhaust valves are supposed to have valve rotators on them, at least that's what I have in my OMC shop manual and both the old heads and the re man heads I got from them had them. Here's what the reman heads looked like...(all stock pre-vortec)….

Here are a couple more pics from today.
Plan on ordering the tools this week and doing a dry run on a 2nd set of heads I have.
Not sure how I'm gonna get this last stud out........no threads left on this one!.

Before you remove anyhing measure the spring with the valve fully open. guessing you wont fit a business card between the coils

Thank you @BtDoctur for the above Test!
This allowed me to see why my Rocker Studs were breaking.

The boat ran great (when the Rocker Studs weren't broken).
Was very "Torquey" between 3600-4000RPM but then seemed to fall on its face!
Is it possible the valves were not opening fully and causing a loss of power?
Guess I won't know until next season!!
