Friend bought an 80s SEA RAY. Engine bay is protected by a halon fire bottle with an automatic discharge head. Bottle and pressure look good so in spite of the age he plans to keep it. Dont know what a new system would cost. Question is, is it still legal to have these things on board? Only thing I know about supression is that carbon-tet went out years ago. thanks FRED

Thanks for the web site. Good read! The section on survival handles caught my eye. Good idea, surprised you dont see more of them on small boats. regards FRED

When we got boarded by the Coast Guard about 2 years back they looked at our fire Extinguishers. One is Halon 1211 and one is dry power. All they did was check the guage. I do not think they sell the hand held ones like we have anymore.

Halon is a fantastic extinguishing medium. The tree huggers would have us all die in a terrible inferno instead of using a chlorofluorohydrocarbon. Don't get me started on the scientific data on the "ozone hole".

Yes, Halon is still legal, just not produceable in the Keyoto 'Industrialized" countries. China, India and the other major polluters are exempt. Buy what you can, it doesn't get too old to do the job and will keep your equipment usable after the fire supression. The price is steep, but still worth it.

If you wnat to make some bucks sell your hand held Halon to industrial users that understand how usefull it is.

Buy some 100 watt incandesent bulbs and sell them in a few years also!

Yeah, but, It's not just tree huggers. Cloroflorocarbons are carcinogenic and some like carbon tetrachloride are toxic. So: Do you want to die quick from fire and/or poison, or slow from cancer?

I do not belive Halon is carcinogenic. First California has a law they anything carcinogenic must have a big label on it stating so. Second a few years before I bought my bought my Halon unit they had people standing inside a plastic tank filled with Halon. They would stick a hand with a lighter out side and light the lighter then pull it back inside and it would go out. After that they would try and light inside and it would not light. These tanks had someone in them all day long for two weeks durning the boat show.
