Thank you all for your answers. Change would be very hard to accomplish. In a hodgepodge of laws and opinions everybody should just be as responsible as they can and make sure to never be on the wrong end of a gun.

Ok here’s my 2 cents worth. I am a former NRA certified pistol instructor and a former hunter safety instructor. Haven’t instructed in over 20 years. I’m still an active range shooter, 1 to 2 times a month and still do some shotgun clay shooting.(these are some of my hobbies)
All of my guns are locked in my gun safe with the exception of my carry and home defense gun. In 30 years I’ve used a gun to stop or deter a crime against me 3 times. All happened in simi remote areas while on fishing trips and once while backpacking . On 2 occasions simply displaying my weapon was sufficient to de escalate the threat and send people on their way. On one occasion when 2 guys were attempting to rob me in a remote area on the California delta while fishing at night I pulled and fired an intentional miss in an attempt to stop the situation. They had not yet pulled a gun and I told them next one would be center mass. They decided they had urgent business elsewhere. Ordinarily people do not get a warning shot but in this particular situation I thought it my most effective first option.
Here’s a couple things I’d like to see but not be made mandatory. When people buy a gun especially first timers I think they should be encouraged to take a basic gun safety and gun handling course. The course should also include when it is appropriate and lawful to use deadly force.
Second I think all who keep a gun for self/home defense should spend time at the range practicing at least twice a year. People who keep a loaded gun at home and haven’t fired them in years kind of scare me. If they are ever in a threatening life death situation things may likely go sideways with unintended consequences. When you are in a life/death situation you generally have a couple seconds or less to assess the situation , decide the course of action and execute the plan. If you are not well practiced you are less likely to successfully assess, decide and execute In the second or two you have.
I could go on and on but will say (you may find this surprising) finally that I’d like people in urban areas to load their guns with self defense ammo and not ball ammo. Far less chance of an innocent being harmed. If anyone doesn’t understand this last point I’d be happy to xplain.

Nope.

IF I was in a location where a firearm was needed, then I'd have the real thing. Training, practice and all.

Honestly, if it gets to that point, the house is going up for sale and we're moving.

ok....question...
what are your legal actions if in your car surrounded by a mob beating on it. No door opening, no window breaking...... just a lot of yelling, kicking,
this happened, right?..all you have is your handgun.....

Hand on horn, vehicle in drive, and if that isn't enough...4x4. I might feel a bump as they go under the vehicle.

Crass explanation but not escalated with a gun.

Sounds like you really need to take a self defense course in your state... Then you can hear about all the legalities... Opinions are just that, you need to know what the law sez...
That being said, good luck dealing with a mob if you stick around...

I do vote with my wallet, I will not go inside the 494/694 of the Twin Cities to visit or spend $, because it is a crime infested h-hole. I avoid the chaos.

That is actually a tough question. Too many factors and unknowns to give you a definitive answer. I can tell you though if you just run over people you will be sued and you may be prosecuted. If you shoot someone even if justified and in self defense you will be sued and you also may be prosecuted. I tell people who are getting their concealed carry permit if you ver have to discharge your firearm no matter what the circumstances it’s almost 100% you will be sued by someone. Be sure to carry cow insurance. As far as prosecution it depends on the circumstances and the DA. As previously stated you really need to take a self defense or cow couse.

First thought that comes to mind is immediately start recording it. Give fair warning with the horn and verbal that you are going to proceed with moving the car. At least you be able show in court they were able to get out of the way but chose not to move after the warning. If you draw your weapon and fire your screwed.

This may be dumb but who here does not have personal liability insurance in excess of a million $? Not a homeowners policy and expect to be covered but personal liability insurance. Not that it would change ones behavior.

Your home owners or car insurance would not cover you if you are charged with a crime. That’s why people who conceal carry should have special insurance
