Grinding Noise

I have a 1986 60hp Mercury , I put a new prop on last fall i put the muffs on it to test and when I shifted into forward it makes a grinding noise,Did not do this with old prop,Any suggestions ? Thanks

Have you replaced the old prop for same new one ? If not, probably the rear prop spacer is too short or different and the back of the prop it's grinding against the front of the prop shaft housing ?

I thought it was an indentical replacement prop but i will double check.Thanks

The thrust washer goes between the prop and gearcase. You must have one that is correct for the new prop. Sometimes the thrust washers for different props are not interchangeable.

Maybe not the issue…but good to be aware that going into gear on the trailer sounds scary and so different from in the water. Thought I’d mention.

This is my guess, the old one was quiet the new one hollering. Did you get a thrust washer?

You need to pull the prop and inspect the lower unit and front of the prop hub for damage. Only reason you should get the problem you mentioned is that the thrust washer is incorrect....as others have indicated....and the prop is rubbing against the engine housing.

If a prop is used with a unsuitable thrust washer/spacer or without one while hearing a high grinding noise, will end sanding the rear of the prop and the front of the prop housing as well....

I would expect a "clunk" unless he moved the shifter at a snail's pace, not a grinding noise.

Possibly. He did say it happens when he shifts into gear.
