I just replaced the impeller in my '56 Evinrude 3 hp. Anything in the motor that needs greased or oiled while I got it apart ? Are there any O-rings or seals anywhere that would need replaced ? -Thanks

Re: Greased or oiled ?

Make sure you lightly grease the splines at the top of the driveshaft, and make sure the o-ring is in place there. You could pressure test the lower unit to see if there are any other leaking seals. There is a driveshaft seal and a propshaft seal, and of course, the seals on the oil drain and vent screws. The propshaft seal sometimes gets fishing line wrapped around which compromises it. If you drained the L/U oil and it wasn't milky and no water came out, you should be ok.

Make sure you do not get any grease on the "top" of the drive shaft...only grease the splines. Otherwise a hydraulic situation could arise and you'll never get the shaft off next time!

the o ring should go in the slot right below the splines on the drive shaft the should be a a groove that it sits in
