After the boat has sat long enough to cool, it exhausts grayish smoke & idles rough for a bit then runs great. In the driveway I see some sheen on the surface of the water pooled on the ground & I'm seeing black stains around the exhaust relief ports. Obviously it's burning some oil on startup. Plugs are also sooty. After it warms up it runs like a top.
This year the boat has been running better than ever so we've done some longer runs at a time. I'm wondering what would cause this kind of oil burning? Is it due to scoring in the cylinders or leakage past valves? It is a 32 yr old engine, but I don't have experience in engine rebuilding. I've done everything else mechanical so I'm not afraid of fixing stuff. Wondering if I should worry about it or get some additive like Restore or Slick 50 or just leave well enough alone? I did have to add 1qt of oil this summer for our last run of the season. Oil in the pan was still really clean (almost like new), just 1qt low.
