got screwed new boater help

I bought a 1990 reinell was told it was a great boat and water ready(not). Engine is a Volvo penta 4.3 efi 6 cyl , out drive is a omc cobra . My trouble is shifting engaging and disengaging. Can not figure out how to drop engine speed to shift properly. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome!

The first thing I would check is the shift interrupter switch. On the bracket that holds the cables there is an electronic limit switch, check to make sure it good and wired right. Easy to do but will need manual.

Second check that all cables are adjusted right, also easy but will need manual again to properly adjust.

If all that is good problem could shifter, drive or bad cable. Check that stuff report back and tell us what you found. Get your self the manual for drive and engine they will help with slot.

Good news is as long as it's not the drive your only lookin at a little time or if cables or shifter need replace a couple 100 bucks

Going to need some information for both the engine and the outdrive.
First, what is the Volvo serial number or the FULL model number of your engine.
the outdrive. Different wiring on different engines.

Second, Is this the dog style clutch cobra original to the boat, or the SX style drive?

thanks for replying, there is no shift interupter just the shift cables, the guy i purchased the boat from had replaced the cobra engine w/the 6 bank electronic fuel injection volvo penta. an old omc tech. told me that the only way to fix would be to swap out engine or put in a volvo sx outdrive that i can not afford. {engine runs great outdrive runs great just dont belong together}. can not get the ser. or model # right now its at the shop. Thanks

Post some pics of the drive and then the shifter and the shifter at the motor.Any cables and connectors.Then,ANY pics you think might help.
The drive might be an older Volvo and not need a shift interupt.
Just lower RPM's.
