Glad to see you got the camera working, I been following for quite a while. Trying to learn more on the sharkhide.

Keep the shinny side up, will not apply here. Nice progress

Re: Got me a Starchief

Not quite as much progress today as I had hoped for, but I can't complain. A friend of mine came down today from North Jersey to help me make the new dash. There was a lot of donut eating, coffee drinking, talking, staring and just general visiting going on, but we did manage to fab up the new mahogany dash. The one pic of the day is the new dash along with the sweet $20 used stainless wheel I picked up last week. Tomorrow I'll take it all back apart to stain & varnish the dash, clean up the steering bezel and cut the holes for tach, voltmeter and switches. Also I figured out how to post pics with photobucket - thanks again for the tip GA!

Re: Got me a Starchief

I managed to find some time this week to make some progress. I got the first coat of green paint on wednesday afternoon. I'm a lousy painter, so this morning I sanded the runs out and gave it a second coat. I also got the first coat of "sandstone" on today, I'm sure it will need to have runs sanded out as well.
Also I cut a piece of Nautolex for the cabin roof behind the windshield. I'll let it sit up there a couple days to get the curl out before glueing it down.
Here are the pics of the day....

Just look at that giant splashwell. Back in the day I would have that filled to the top with ice and a certain beverage

Coming along nicely. Good idea on the nautolex up there. I might do the same if I have enough left.
Those wells are friggin huge. I'll bet it would hold enough for a weekend. Hoping the 8" I shaved off mine will be worth it. I have a spare headboard so give me a shout if you decide to mod yours.

Really looking sharp RH... that splash well is large enough for a couple of big motors :D or it could act as a hot tub in a pinch! :).

I like the sandstone... it will stay much cooler in the sun as well.

Nice work.

Re: Got me a Starchief

Thanks for checking in guys.
GA, it does seem close to motor hanging time, I've been concentrating on the boat though, and not the work that needs to be done on the motor. I have to bring the boat home this week, the warehouse has been sold, so I'll start on the motor while the boat goes into a cocoon for a while.
Michael, I really like that Nautolex. I wish I had bought enough to do the floor.
Thanks IM, the sandstone was a last minute decision, I almost went with silver gray with the green. I think the sandstone gives it more of a retro look without the industrial look the gray would have given it. And a couple big motors? hmmmmm, maybe I should use my Merc 850 as the main, and the 50 as a kicker..

Not a whole lot of progress today. I cut the holes in the new dash for the tach and voltmeter, drilled the holes for the switches and stained the whole assembly.
In true bottom feeder fashion, I took apart the old push/pull switches and cleaned them all up to reuse them. Hopefully I finish work early enough tomorrow to put the first coat of varnish on the dash.

Looking real good RH, I like your color choice. With a little bit of time those switches work just as well as new ones with out the added cost!!!!

Lookin' good man. That is going to turn some heads. Went to the boat show two weekends ago and saw mucho fiberglass but these boats kick their butts. Some of those boats were nicer than my living room. I would be afraid to take them outside.

Re: Got me a Starchief

Thanks Glen. Whats kind of funny with the switches is that I had bought new toggle switches mounted in a modern looking plastic panel to use. But while I was making up the dash I was looking at them and thought they just wouldn't look right on a wood dash, so I fixed up the old ones to keep the retro look. I got the first coat of varnish on the dash tonight, I can't wait to see what it looks like with the gauges, switches and steering all in it.
Thanks Otte. For some reason I have no desire to go to the boat show. I don't even like looking at the new boats in magazines. When I look at them I have a hard time getting past the fact that most cost more than my pickup truck. Some more than my house. I like old boats, and wooden boats. Homebuilt wooden boats are even better in my book. I had wanted to build a Tolman skiff, but I'm glad I opted to get the Starchief instead. I'd like to get some boating in before I'm 90:D

i've come to see most magazines as merely "bauble galleries", tellin you why you NEED to buy the latest n greatest. boat shows are no doubt the same but worse.....

Re: Got me a Starchief

Finally made a little progress last week and weekend. I had to bring the Chief home from the warehouse last monday. The good thing about that is it's closer to home, bad thing is it's outside.
I did finish up the dash. Hopefully I will be able to get it installed this week. I also re-sanded and stained the cabin wall and polished all the rail parts. I'm really looking forward to reassembly.
Anyway, here is the one pic I took of the progress....

I think it will look better in the boat.
Thanks for checking in!

That mahogany looks real nice, and so long as your moving forward progress is good.

With the boat closer you will also be able to take on bigger tasks in smaller tasks as it is that much more convenient for you. Looking good though. Progress is getting you steps closer to splashing!
