Re: Got me a Starchief

I had a sign shop I do a lot of business with make me a pair of new Starcraft emblems. They are plastic outdoor sign material cut out with a laser. I think they came out pretty nice.

Those are great! Sure did come out nice.

Forgot to say about the comp. #s. If the Merc has been sitting awhile, squirt some pre-mix in the plug hole, crank it some and let it sit for a bit. A lot of times the rings get sticky from the oil and lack of use.

I would see if it runs first and got from there.

Re: Got me a Starchief

I'm on the fence with the motor. I'm not at all against a total rebuild, because I want it to be as reliable as it can be. I just wonder if a newer one would be a better candidate for that. I'm new at this old Mercury stuff. I want to stick with Merc because the local Merc dealer was very good to me with my Merc 50. But I kinda wonder how reliable the ignition system is, with the obsolete distributer cap. I'm no mechanical engineer but the belt drive distributer doesn't seem to me to be a good design either. Not to mention this motor doesn't have tilt & trim. I've never had that though, so I really don't know what I'm missing.
Enough rambling about the motor though. Today was the last full day I can afford to spend working on the boat. And of course I forgot the camera. All I did though was wet sand the sides of the hull and transom as the first step in prepping for Sharkhide.
Tomorrow hopefully I can get away from my real work in time to spend a couple hours on the boat.
Thanks for stopping by!

Re: Got me a Starchief

Merc made lots and lots of motors with the belt drive. It is a pretty reliable system. Even the distributor. But if you aren't comfortable. I understand. A motor with TnT would prob work out better for a StarChief.

It would be much easier to reach that motor if you shortend the splash well. I can help with that if you want to do it and I even have a new head board that might fit. If you can dish out the denaros for a new OB by all means go for it. There will be no worries for a very long time.

Those emblems look awesome.

Just my 2 cents but I'd run that Merc as-is (minor repairs only) or not at all. I would not put the money or effort into rebuilding it. That would be too much investment into a motor with the minimum acceptable power for the hull and no TnT to boot. I'd sooner see you put the money towards a larger motor with TnT.

Mike: Believe me when I saw you had that headboard I was really tempted to shorten the splashwell, yours came out great. But believe it or not, I like the huge under-splashwell space for fuel tanks and battery. I have 4 6 gallon tanks that fit in perfect along with the battery.
EZ: I know I'm going to waver a lot in the next few weeks on this, but todays thought is minimal repairs on the Merc 850, put it back on the Thunderbird in the spring and sell the whole package. I remember reading in one of your threads about your friend with a Chief, I think with a 90 that seems underpowered. When I was running the 50 Merc, I was ok with top & cruising speeds, just the low speed maneuvering was lousy. I do agree that it would be ideal to have at least 100 hp. And even though I've never had it, I could get used to TnT probably pretty quick. I'm not getting any younger, no matter how hard I try to resist it. I am an admitted hardhead though, so tomorrow I may have a new plan.

Of course I forgot the camera again today. I could only get a couple hours in on the Chief, but I started spraying the self etching primer. It was a good feeling. And I don't mean from the fumes :)

Re: Got me a Starchief

Thanks for the pic/video link EZ. With the 50 mine topped out at about 25 also. I drive like an old man (no offense to other old men intended), so I would even be happy with a top speed of 30. Today my plan still remains though to sell the 85, attached to the Thunderbird. Also sell the 50 (although it would be cool to have another smaller tinny to put it on), and get something a little bit more modern and bigger. At least mid 80's vintage, minimum 90 hp.

Today I did a little more etching primering, and started in on polishing the sides of the hull which will remain unpainted.000_1804.jpg000_1805.jpg

Tomorrow I will remove the masking paper, do some more polishing, and get the boat prepared to move to the next work location. My time runs out at the truck shop friday, and I have a pretty full schedule of money making work for friday.

Re: Got me a Starchief

That Merc 50 would push a 15/16 footer real nice. My Nassau w/Merc 500 goes 30 and I haven't really done anything to it yet. It runs well and all I've done is impeller and fuel pump. The prop is a little beat up and and I'm still playing with trimming the motor so I know it has some left. Gotta rebuild the carbs too.

Hope your new location is as nice as the truck shop. You got a bit done.

Re: Got me a Starchief

Nice progress! Love those emblems!

I'm with EZ on that motor, I'd either run it as is and see what happens or sell it.
It's not what you need and even if you dump all sorts of cash into it, it's still only 85hp on a boat that needs 100+.
For the amount of work and cash, you should be able to find something decent that's much newer.
That 85hp is also heavy, maybe just as heavy as a newer 100+ hp four cylinder. If you were to add power tilt and trim to that, you would be nearing the weight of a modern motor with internal TnT. I'd venture to guess that your 85hp is in the 250lb range, plus another 40-50lbs if you add TnT to it.
I bought that 115ELPTO that reelfishin had a few weeks ago, it's oil injected with TnT, ready to run and weighs in at 333lbs on the hook.
He had two more of these there, I think they were all on the same boat at one point. I think he's getting close to moving everything, he's got that shop almost down to only a few hundred motors and maybe 20 boats, which is a far cry from what was there a year ago. I did see what looked like the 110hp from your Starchief on a stand, with a brand new TnT unit ready to go on it there. He said something about putting it on a boat he had down in FL. I found it odd that he was up north in Dec. and not down south where its warm, so I sort of figured he was here picking up a load of stuff to take down with him.

Its hard to beat modern conveniences, especially as you get older. A few years ago I'd have never thought about power tilt, or cared, but once you have it, you don't want to go back. Not to mention oil injection and modern ignition systems. I'm not yet convinced about fuel injection though, at least not as long as it takes expensive equipment to diagnose and repair it.

I also have to agree with this thinking, why spend money on a motor that's just not the right match for the boat.
There's nothing like having power tilt/trim and not worrying about being able to find parts for some old outdated motor.
I had an older Mercury 850, but mine was a 6 cylinder, the price of the distributor cap alone made me sell it. For a little more than the cost of a tune up with a new cap and rotor I bought a newer motor with tilt and trim that runs far better and uses a lot less gas than that antique did.

I'd also be interested in a set of those emblems or where to get them.

Nice project you are working, I also agree with the mob, run the Merc as is till you can find the right deal on the O/B you really want.

Re: Got me a Starchief

Ok, Ok...I'm going with the mob and will get a newer outboard with TnT. I just need to finish the rest of the boat first, and sell the 50 and the 85, and the Thunderbird first..

The truck shop was a great place to work. Lots of room, some heat, decent lighting and also some entertainment. Kinda reminded me of my motorcycle shop days. But, my time there ran out today so I hauled the Chief to a borrowed garage for the next week, and then it will go to a warehouse space I can borrow. I can't work on the boat where it is now, but I have the rails at home to polish up and other parts I can sort out for the next week to keep he progress going. I also need to catch up on work. I usually slow down this time of year, but things are piling up. And it hasn't even snowed yet.

Thanks for stopping by!

Re: Got me a Starchief

I'm happy with the cruising speeds, and it's fuel usage so far. What I forgot to mention though is that with such a low pitch prop, the low speed handling is pretty squirrelly. As in it's pretty hard to go slow and manuever in a strong current, which is typical for the river here. The guy who sold me the prop told me that it was likely to do that, and he was right. I've learned a lot about props this past week. Maybe I don't need to go all the way to 100 HP, but probably at least 75. Anyway, I'm in no hurry to do so with the season winding down and funds getting pretty (really) low in the boating budget. I do have a new hat that is sure to add some horsepower though!

Re: Got me a Starchief

This past week I have been juggling jobs and have not had a chance to work on the Starchief or it's parts at all. The closest I came was yesterday I transported it to a warehouse where I can once again work on it indoors. It has a nice steel beam in the ceiling that I can use to hoist it up on it's side to finish stripping the bottom. I hope to get there tomorrow afternoon to work on it. I am a little scared though. There is a glass boat and 2 jetskis in the warehouse also. I have to keep my distance so I don't itch :):D

This may be the first tinny re-build by a Tin Hat in a HazMat suit. LOL Watch out for those jetskis. You know they buzz around like skeeters.:p
