Re: Good Bye Allstate Insurance

A lot has to do with the Agent
Allstate is the only one around here that will cover my boat. 14ft river sled with a 90hp pump.
I was happy with them for 13 years.. full coverage on four vehicles.. truck, car, sports car and boat for $750.00 a year but Mrs.Link being "thrifty" (another term for cheap) went through another firm with better rates on everything. Except the boat.. Now we hav 5 different insurance companies.. I no longer have that warm fuzzy feeling knowing I just need to stop up the road to talk to someone.. but it saved us a lot each year and the one and only fender bender we had was taken care of very fast and they didnt raise our rates..
Still not happy with the situation but it seems to work.

Hey Ny, same thing happened to my sis in 2000. Alstate jumped her premiums by 62%. She contacted State Farm, much better rates. She called her Allstate agent up to reconsider the rate increase. Her agent with Allstate wouldn't even talk to her. Now shes perfectly happy with State Farm, except they wouldn't insure BIL boat. Seems State Farm dosen't like twin 454's.

Re: Good Bye Allstate Insurance

My father had Allstate and put me on his policy when I started driving. When I assumed the policy cost I was still in college and then moved several times in one year.
Once I finally settled down, I wanted to transfer the agent of record to an agent here locally. He said that I would have to write a note stating my desire. That's when I told him, if he wanted me as a client he'd have to take of it. He did. Continued with Allstate on my own for over 20 years. Then shortly after 911 my home owners policy cost DOUBLED. When I called to inquire why, the agent replied, costs have gone up.

It didn't take me long to find a company that provided double the protection at half my original Allstate cost. I have since transferred 4 auto policies, home owners, boat coverage, and an umbrella coverage to the new company.

When an Allstate agent calls and wants my business I just laugh and hang up.

Re: Good Bye Allstate Insurance

When I was 21 I had Allstate. I passed a car travelling at 50mph on the highway. I pulle dback in and braked to 55mph, WHAM! He hit me from behind. The State Trooper who responded issued him a ticket and listed me as having no fault. A hazardous action rating of 0, ZERO! The other driver had Allstate too. I was written a check for $400.00. Then I got a letter telling me that I was going to be surcharged 15% for being 50% at fault. When I calle dand asked why I was told I was 50% at fault because I hit my brakes. He hit me after I had slowed to the legal speed limit which was 5mph faster than he had been travelling when I passed him. When I asked them how I could be 50% at fault when the responding officer found me to have Zero fault I was told they could assess fault as they felt appropriate. I fought the assesment, and guess what, they refused to renew my policy, due to excessive points. I had 6 points, two day after my "renewal" date I would have 2 points. I called 2 years later and was told because my policy was cancelled for high risk I would have to be written as high risk, even though I had been clean for over a year. What a rip-off!!!

In Good Hands, yeah right.

Re: Good Bye Allstate Insurance

Never had Allstate, but Farmer's also screwed me after being a loyal customer for almost 20 years.

I've never been in an accident with them. The only claims I ever done was a few dented fenders caused by backing into a tree in my yard, and another when a branch fell out of a tree while hunting.

I'm with AIG right now. Seems to be OK.

The problem is, those of us that's been on insurance forever with little or no claims... You aren't making them any money. They'll try everything they can to get your rates up.

Since you added your children... BINGO... that's the loophole they needed.

The only power you have in this is to do exactly what you did... Tell them to take a hike!

As much as I love my kids, I will never add them to my policy. They must get their own. It wouldn't be fair if they had a claim... then we would all suffer with the raised rates.

Farmer's tried to get me to list my kids even though they didn't even have a drivers permit!

LINK: Have you tried BoatUS.com for insurance?
I've been with them for a few years now. Their rates were much lower and better coverage than a local agent.

H.

Re: Good Bye Allstate Insurance

I have to agree that years ago I dropped Allstate due to their agent. Evasive in their answers to questions regarding my boat coverage, jacking me around with premiums, and little quirks that just made dealing with them more difficult than it should have been.

I can't imagine ever going back with them. And its all to do with a poor agent. I expressed my displeasure with my checkbook.

My local allstate agent is the best around. I had state farm and cut my bill in half when I switched over to Allstate, I even have better coverage now. The agents are wonderful, I couldnt ask for better. Now state farm, they were screwing me when they upped my rates for no reason is when I switched, will never go back!

Re: Good Bye Allstate Insurance

I have been insured by Allstate for over 50 years (cars, home, boat, vacation home) and in all of that time I had only one problem and I can't even remember what it was. I do recall that I wrote to them saying, "Maybe you are in good hands with Allstate but it appears that the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing." That got their attention and they posted it in Allstate offices all over the country.

Had two claims in the last few years - one car and one boat (trailer). Both were generously settled with checks issued immediately.

I might be able to get an individual policy cheaper somewhere else but at my age (78) and with multiple car and policy discounts, I'm not about to change.

Re: Good Bye Allstate Insurance

All insurance companies have done things that were not "right" in someones eyes. That is the nature of the game and that is why there are so many insurers out there. If one company gave everyone the best rates with the best coverage, and the best claim service there would only be that company......... Please take others experiences with a grain of salt and confront YOUR agent before disaster happens to get an idea of your coverage. Ask him or her what would happen to my policy if X event happened. Tell him you want an answer based on past occurrences and you want it in writing (you may not get the writing part so make good notes while talking to him in person). I did this with my homeowners just as a test many years ago. I did not like the answer and now have a new insurance company...........

To expand on my statements above about others experiences. My mother had State farm for Auto & Homeowners for 20+ years. Due to fire protection ratings where she lives she was told that her homeowners would be going from $900/yr to about $2500/yr. She called USAA and they told her it would be $1100/yr. She told USAA to start the policy on 4/20 (I do not remember the exact dates so they are a guestimate). She then called State Farm and told them to cancel her homeowners on 4/21. Well, on 4/10 she got a letter from State farm (with a small refund check in it) saying her insurance had been cancelled on 4/2 (the date she called them). Basically her home had been uncovered for 8 days (in the height of tornado/thunderstorm season) because they could not follow instructions.

She had a crappy agent without a doubt. I have State Farm coverage on all my cars and my boat and would have it on my home but USAA is about $200/yr cheaper. Good rates and great service. So I have nothing against SF but I would think again if I moved back to my hometown.

Re: Good Bye Allstate Insurance

Its been awhile now with State Farm. Haven't had any problems and my rates have been lowered some. (very unusual for todays standards) My wife got hit several months ago by someone who had Gieko. My SF agent really helped a lot on getting the claim settled.

Something fishy went on with that womans insurance. We only claimed damages to my wifes Explorer. However, that lizard insurance said we turned in claims for bodily injury and a rental car (neither of which we claimed on since the accident was mostly just a bump). Even after that accident, SF sent us a check lowering our premium again.

The new laws limiting teens on thier passengers has really helped cut down on accidents and has made a big diff on premiums.

A lot of how well your treated is also up to the agent. My Allstate agent would have never won a personallity award. It was always a bother to him to make a payment in his office. Just one of the many reasons we switched. BTW, Allstate still has tried numerous times to get us to go back. No way at this point.

Re: Good Bye Allstate Insurance

Well, there's agents and there's companies. Neither has a monopoly on stupidity ... or good sense.

I can't say we've ever had a really obnoxious agent, but a couple have come close. In my previous career, we lived in 10 cities / 6 states. We were used to calling around and getting insurance quotes, and still do that every 3 or 4 years. We've dealt with probably a dozen companies over the past 50 years -- Allstate more than once. Even for national companies, sometimes it seems they just want to not do business in a given area, so they jack their premiums way up, encouraging you to go elsewhere.

A dozen years ago, in west Michigan, we were back with Allstate. Our agent was ok, but suddenly their premiums went way up. We changed to a different company for about half the premiums we were paying. Strange thing, the guy who was our Allstate agent quit Allstate a couple months later and became an independent agent -- for the same agency we went through (although no longer ours). He wrote all of his former clients telling them it seemed to him Allstate was intentionally pricing themselves out of this market.

Right now, we're with a regional, Michigan-based company (Citizen's) for cars and house. They really don't want to insure boats (very high premiums), so we stayed with Progressive on line (no agent). Progressive won't write homeowner policies.

Strange how some companies seem so competitive in one area for one type, and not others.

Re: Good Bye Allstate Insurance

My allstate agent told me a lie and I stopped the policy. After the wife had a minor accident where she hit a car in the rear NO DAMAGE but the occupants I guess wanted to ripp someone off went and got a few needless xrays and the agent said that it was out of his control and even if she had killed several people the rate wouldnt have gone higher........not true ,they could have forgave the points after the many years of no claims we had . I dropped the liers.
