yeah marine tex is probably better than 5200 for the tiny holes and pits, as well as someone elses suggestion for JB weld...

you want that sealer to harden.

good luck

Marine Tex will work well also, if you can find it. I think it may cost a bit more too, but it's good stuff. Both JB and Marine Tex will fill the holes nicely and dry hard enough to machine, prime, paint as you like. I've never heard of anyone using Gluvit on the wood, but if the packaging says it will work, then I suppose it should. I'd be curious to see how it turns out and how well it works. If it does work well that could save folks time and money tying to track down epoxy.

I don't know where the info comes from about Gluvit not being for wood but I think a check with the mfg would be a good idea before discounting it. Gluvit was actually one of the first epoxy coating that worked on wood hulls without glass. Back in "the day" (1960s & 70s) it was the preferrend coating on strip plank wood hulls and seen in use everywhere along the Florida coast...I know of 3 large boats that had their bottoms coated and it worked perfectly. The main reason was to keep worms out but it was tenacious, thick, flexible and sealed the bottoms. No problems. One of the boats was mine...a 42' ketch.

Thanks for all your replys I new the Starcraft forum would be the best place to ask questions about gluvit! I mixed up 18oz today and sealed the wood for my transom it did run a little bit but I really put it on thick actually I mix to much but it seems to be curing out quite well I will know more after 24 hours. I also coated the inside of the transom and applied it alot lighter without runs so I am very confident that it will work on vertical surfaces and seal my transom.I will post pics tommorow .

Cool. Good to know. Best part is that I think you can actually get Gluvit in normal stores, rather than having to order it like most other epoxy supplies. Congrats. Keep the updates and pics coming.

That's great, I figured it would.

How many coats are you applying? I'd suggest at least 3 with proper drying between each coat.

What did you decide to fill your pitting with? Are you going to paint over it?

Jg,
I have decided to go with my original plan fill holes with JB weld and then 3 coats of gluvit on the wood the inside of transom pocket and the back of the boat then I will just paint over the gluvit on the outside only for uv protection.

65Starcraft,
That is exactly what I found if you have spray in foam under your deck I would remove that to I just finished mine and had only two spots of minor corrosion. The foam may seem dry but once you get to the bottom of the boat you will find it holding water against your hull! Also I have one coat of gluvit on my transom wood and it is sealed I plan to apply one more then install any more would be a waste of money the gluvit is that good!

I had the foam block in mine, not spray in. I think the P.O. didn't use marine grade plywood. I haven't found any other corrosion like that anywhere else on the boat.

Not to get off topic or hijack, but is jb weld safe with aluminum? I thought they had some kind of metal mixed in their product, and I was always leary of corrosion with it...

JB weld will not react with aluminum..... it dries and becomes stable.

Gluvit is great stuff and can be used on wood, aluminum inside or outside.

The only caveat with gluvit is that any surfaces exposed to the sun should be painted since it lacks the UV protection and after some time the UV can break it down.

Now that you have re-built the transom......... be certain to seal any and all bolts that pass into the wood. Those holes are the primary culprit in wood rot. This is where the 3m5200 comes in ;)

Re: GLUVIT How good is this stuff? Aluminum transom repair

+1 JB is great stuff to use on aluminum and 3M 5200 for all through-hull fittings. You can get JB in the 2-part, toothpaste tube style, or as a stick/putty that you knead to get to react. The liquid version is best for small holes (smaller than a dime) and spreading around, while the putty is good for bigger ones (larger than a dime). Best of all, you can get it just about anywhere. Once it cures it can be sanded, machined, and painted. Plus, you'll find all kinds of other cool uses for it around your boat and house, but bear in mind whatever you stick together using it ain't EVER coming apart again. It's magical.

Re: GLUVIT How good is this stuff? Aluminum transom repair

Thanks for the info I am along way from installing my transom because I decided to rip up the floor and remove the sprayed in foam but as for the bolt holes through the transom every one seems to agree that 3M 5200 is the best so that is what I will use.
Again Thanks for all the help!

Folks I'm sure glad I read this thread!! I'm at the same exact point as 16SS on a tin boat I'm restoring for retirement use. For the past two days I've been struggling with what to do about my transom. To that end, this was an awsome thread to read. You guys are great!! Good Luck 16SS and 65starcraft.

Hello again 16 Sylvan. Before you rip out the old foam make sure it's not structural. If the hull came from the factory with the foam, then it probably does play some sort of structural role. It's easy enough to replace any old/water logged foam with Pink/Blue, closed-cell insulation board available from Lowes/HD and/or pool noodles, but make sure you determine what structural role the old foam plays before you remove it as you will need to add some sort of bracing to make up for the loss of structural integrity.

Just I quick question about the Gluvit on the wood transom, but would Spar Urethane over the Gluvit be sufficient for UV protection of the Gluvit? Or should it be painted instead? I think it would be nice to keep the look of the wood.

Epoxy does need protection from UV but using "spar urethane" varnish is not the way. For UV protection you want a true marine grade spar varnish. Costs more per quart, but less per year of service. The three varnishes that I like are...: Epifanes Gloss, Interlux Schooner, and Pettit Captain's. Consumer grade single-part urethane resin is more susceptible to damage from UV than the traditional resin's. The spar urethane adds the UV protectant additives to get back to "acceptable", while the marine grade uses the additives to increase protection and extend longevity. You can get the Interlux and Pettit products right here on iboats. Epiphanes you'll hve to order elsewhere. I personally prefer Epiphanes.
