Gluing a paper label on a DVD-R?

Can you do it without causing any issues in the DVD player? I would be inclined to use a spray adhesive so there would be no lumps or loose edges to catch and fly off.

....but still, I thought I'd ask the all knowing ones.

You can buy lables to stick on dvds. Peel and use a small press that's included in the kits.
Printable ones too.

I used to do this with all of the movies I used to download and burn. Only thing I noticed over the years is some of the lables would start to wrinkle. Presumably from moisture/humidity.

Mrs B made a label of the contents of the DVD, off of a screen print of the directory. Don't know how you might print that on label like you mentioned.

You can buy packages of DVD labels. If you don't do many, an office supply store might sell individual sheets.

Once you have them, most print utilities will print them...including Win 2007 or later. Just go to "New" ....."Labels" ....."Media Labels".

There will be a number of options that will work.


Alternatively, if that is too much trouble, and if this is archival material/backup only, Use a sharpie marker on the CD for clear ID/ naming. then use the label on the CD Jewel case to list the name and then the Index/Table of contents.

You can download free cd label software, then design or type in this editor, then print.

Otherwise Like you were talking about, if you wanted to use a spray adhesive. YOu would have to make sure the glue wouldn't react with metals. or be too strong to pull the foil off the top of the cd/dvd.

Based on my experience of using address labels on DVD and CDR, your going to run into an out of balance problem and the disc will be readable in certain drives and not in others, get a label kit for about 20 bucks at one of the office stores and you should be good to go, you do know , you can highlight the directory then paste into word/notepad and then into the CD label program text fields?

I don't not like my lightscribes, they don't put a definate label on th discs, you have to roll them side to side, to see what has been burnt on the top of them, in addition, the discs are not cheap compared to other DVD's. Around here they are hard to find.

Self adhesive DVD labels from Office Depot, Wal-Mart, Staples, whatever. Free DVD label making software is included with the majority of them. Drag & Drop pics, hundreds of fonts, a dozen or more pre-formatted guides to help you along. Takes minutes and I have never had an issue with any of my labels and some are over 5 years old and still sticking strong. They also come with the templates for making the DVD case inserts.

One of Arrow Tank's customers sent some engineering information on a CD with an imbalanced label. When it blew up in the drive at 15,000 rpm (52 x 300) it blew the door right off it. Draftsman that had just loaded the CD just about loaded his pants.

I do hundreds of CD's and DVD's a year. use paper labels now. Going to go to direct ink-jet printing on a white blank disk.

I've seen the printable disks with the ink jet,, very nice if you do a lot of disks.

Lite scribe. I haven't used one in about 2-3 years. Never was a fan. The image while somewhat clear usually ended up fading away. Not to mention if you touched the disk before hand with your greasy hands.

Mr & Mrs B would be best suited for going to the office store and buying the labeling kit. Print, peel and stick.

Ok, I am off the glue on label, especially after hearing the out of balance issue. Add to that Mrs B cut the lable so it would be sure to be off balance. I will look into the other options. I might as well, I just bought a 100 pack of DVD-R's at Costco. Seems that would be a lot of labeling. It would be nice to print right on the DVD itself.

It's possible that a paper label could cause an out of balance issue but the major reason that paper is bad is that it causes players to overheat and skip, stall and stutter. Heat needs to rise through the disk from the laser and dissipate, paper prevents it from doing so. Epson makes disk printers that are fairly cheap if you don't plan on making too many, if you are planning on doing several thousand or more in the future Primera Bravo SE is the way to go.

Actually I've never experienced any overheating on any of my cd's, vcds or DVDs with labels. Only issue I've have with a few of them is the paper wrinkling up over times

That's an issue on a fast burn, but not playing. You burn the disk, then put the label on. It will be physically hot out of a good fast recorder.

If a disk has an out of balance issue it would show up right away, in the middle of Grandpa's 3 hour presentation on a trip to the Grand Canyon rendered at 3 bits and the DVD starts to stall it's not an out of balance issue. If the disk is clean it will be an overheating issue and you'll know if you can pick it at the same point when the player cools off- paper makes the whole scenario worse.
All players aren't created equal, if you send out a thousand disks that are played in an equal amount of players and you use paper you'll have some that play ok but the majority of problems will be overheating caused by paper.
In the disk reproduction world using paper would be considered a "newbie" mistake, it would be tantamount to painting the hull of your boat with left over interior home latex paint. I was in the business for over a decade and I made the mistake of using paper - it didn't take long to learn their are absolutely no advantages with paper especially now when dvd printers can be had for $75.

YaBut, they tell me that CD/DVD's are on the way out. That is all I need is to end up with another $75 worth of obsolete computer stuff.

I have a fine point sharpie I use to label my DVDs and use light pressure to write what it is about across the top. That's why they give you the lines across the top as a guide. Just don't use anything with a hard point as a ball roller to write on the top of the CD or DVD.
