I did a test piece of some oak with cognac stain, since they were out of the black cherry, and the color seems fine, just have to deal with the pronounced grain. I stained one piece today without any sealer or conditioner

Gonna try the next few samples with unwaxed shellac or conditioner, and maybe a gel....oak is oak, so it will never be clear, but a little more uniformity may be nice....QS white oak would be better, but its not in the cards for this build.

Yeah, if I were down there, id help you distill some peroxide, maybe throw in some raisins, put it out in the sun to ferment! :D

I forgot the stress of choosing stain when there's no turning back after the choice ;)

At this point, if it shines and floats, im all good.

I’m about to start the A/C here in Pensacola. It’s supposed to cool down some on Friday. It’s gotta be cooler and drier outside to work on anything. Starting Friday, we’re supposed to have five or six days without rain!
Cheers

Then I cut out the deck cloth to try to set tomorrow.

See if you can find some quartersawn red oak. It takes stain much more uniformly and has a nice straight grain.

I did find some QS in the bunch Mike, but im using some of that to cap the gunnels, so I decided im gonna paint the front deck slats green to match the hull, and rip some of the QS to 1/4 x 1/4 to use in place of caulk between and stain those to match the gunnel trim. The flat sawn will just never look right.

If you're going for a clean look, I would actually try to find rift sawn oak instead of QS. The medullary rays will take the stain differently than the surrounding wood and you will be back in a similar situation with the highlighted cathedral grain of the flatsawn oak.

I can get rift or quarter sawn in white or red within 100 miles, but the smallest is 4/4 rough, and im still lacking a bandsaw, planer and jointer, plus its really not worth the effort on this boat. Im actually liking the new plan for the front deck by just stabilizing the planks with epoxy and painting them the hull color with the wood strip caulking, giving it the modern picnic boat look.

Headed out back now to wet out the deck cloth.....;)
