Well I have a glastron v185 it's a 1970's model I believe and I have decided to keep this boat going and there are two soft spots there is one under each seat pass/driver. How do I go about this? I've thought about ripping out the carpet and spraying it with truck bed liner then carpeting over that? That's a bad idea I know but I don't really wanna replace the whole floor. Any help or idea would be great! Thank you!

Use fiberglass. Cut the rotten crap away preferably back to a stringer, but not to the other side of the stringer. Kind of like drywall repair if you have done that. Cut a piece of plywood the same thickness as the floor. Coat the backside and edges with some fiberglass resin. Put the panel in place. Drill and screw it in, some adhesive wont hurt either. I like the Bondo hair (or the finer one, i think its called glass or something) fiberglass for around the seams. Lay it on as smooth as possible to minimize grinding and sanding later. Once that hardens scuff that repair area and the old solid floor area till all the crud is gone and the new glass has some tooth. Cut a piece of fiberglass cloth that covers the whole area. Paint a layer of resin over the whe area the. Lay the cloth down. Coat the cloth and about an in h surrounding it with resin. The cloth will absorb it and become almost clear. Make sure you can't see the surface of the cloth through the surface of the resin, add. More resin in those areas.

Let it harden overnight then you can carpet over the top. It wi be rock solid.

WEAR GLOVES AND DO IT IN A WELL VENTATED AREA! AND WEAR A MASK WHE GRINDING OR SANDING

I am no pro, but that is how I do it, and it works.

I add fireproof spray foam under floor areas that will not be storage.

Walmart has everything you need. Get a few quart cans of the Bondo fiberglass hair and a gallon of the resin and about 4 packs of the cloth.

Pay attention mixing the glass and hardener. It makes a big difference.

Uhhhmmm there's a lot more to it than just slapping some Bondo Hair on some soft spots!!!!! Safety should be your #1 concern. If the deck is soft that's usually an indication of major problems below. If your stringers are soft and rotting then the structural integrity of the boats hull will be in jeopardy. The transom needs to be checked as well. A 40 yr old boat needs to have a thorough inspection of all the structural parts to insure their seaworthiness. We're here to help, if you want to make sure your boat is ready for the water.;)

Thank you for the help! I will be turning to you guys a lot through this project. I will inspect it thoroughly and I'm hoping its not rotted under there.

And another question the seats were completely rotted out. So I tore them out and the floor is solid except those two spots and I want new carpet. Where should I get the carpet and where do I find those seats that are at the front of the boat? I have no clue what there called.

We'll need pic's to be able to help you. Open a Free Photobucket account and then use the IMG Code to copy and paste em into iBoats.

Those are called cushions and you will need to make em yourself or have an upholstery shop make em for you. Don't think you'll find em any other way. I would advise you to jump up and down on the lower leg of the motor and have someone check to see if the transom flexes even just a little bit. If it does you will need to replace the transom and I'd strongly recommend you remove part of the deck and check the stringers.

Re: Glastron floor repair. Need help.

How much do you think I could sell this boat for when I'm done. Or would I be better off getting a good boat? This is what I'm looking at now getting.

All the boats of that era ( your current one and the other one you are looking at) are susceptible to rot of the floors, stringers, and transom.

Fiberglass work isn't hard, it's just time consuming and messy.

Like it was said above, make sure the structural part of the boat is good when you open up the floor.

Good luck!

Re: Glastron floor repair. Need help.

If you have a boat that can be the boat you love (I.e. the layout, size, hull type etc. Is what you want) might as well fix it up. As mentioned, all 20+ year old fiberflass boats are likely rotted to some degree. Without having known the boat from day one, almost the only way to know it is 100% is to restore it yourself. It would be easy to get another in as bad, or worse, shape.

In my opinion, a boat with rot, isn't worth the cost of registering, unless you are looking for a motor/trailer. Not sure one could be sold to bring in enough cash to put a significant dent in the cost of a known good glass boat.

Re: Glastron floor repair. Need help.

I thought my 1970's Glastron transom was good, but it wasn't:

Most of the rot was down below the waterline, near the drain plug.
