Glass Fuse Amp?

There is a glass fuse that is plugged into a wire that leads to the battery. It blew when I forgot to hook up one of my red main wires to the battery, causing the dash to go dead. I was unable to buy another glass one at the time so I was given a ceramic one. I suspect it is not the right amp, because I sometimes blow the ceremic fuse when I try to start the boat. What amp was the glass fuse? Icannotfind the one I took out.

"What amp was the glass fuse? Icannotfind the one I took out." I don't mean to be a smart ass but if you don't know how are we supposed to know? Get an amp meter and put in series to measure the current while starting. Most meters only read up to 10 amps, you'll need one to measure 30ish to 50ish amps. What is the amp rating of the ceramic fuse you bought and why did you get that rating of fuse?

we do not know if your boat is a 10 foot dinghy, or a 200 foot trawler.

we do not know the current load on your fuse holder.

at a minimum. what kind of boat? what kind of motor? where was the fuse? what does it power? what size wire is coming out of the fuse to its load? that would give us at least a bit of information to make a guess

I figured if someone has their glass fuse they could look or if they have the electric diagram they would know. I don’t have access to an amp meter and I don’t know how to read one. I went to a store with the glass fuse and asked for a new one. They didn’t have any, only ceremic ones. They gave me two and told me they were equivalent to what I had. I don’t remember what they said. I am not a mechanic. I just need the correct fuse. I am selling my boat. It is too much for me to handle. My ex-husband used to do all the maintenance.

A fuse is a fuse….
Glass or ceramic doesn’t matter, well at least in this application.

Forgetting to hook up a positive lead will not blow a fuse. That is, unless the circuit in question is being back feed from another circuit. In that case, all bets are off

Either they didn't match up the fuse properly or you caused a problem in the circuit.

Amperage of fuse in question?

Can find the information on the schematic, but need to know what boat/motor combo you have. They are all different.

I have a glass fuse in a holder that runs to the key switch. That size fuse is probably 10a but I know it’s not marked. I ‘think’ this is probably what your talking about.. the fuse for a cheap cigarette lighter plug is the same ( the one in the end of the barrel you un screw )

Is your wiring original? As mentioned above, I can't think of a scenario that would cause your symptoms. Of course we have no idea what you're working on, so who knows
