Do you got a 2" wide strap you can wrap around the tube and then tie a rope to it to tow around on the water? As long as you start out slowly before throttling up they'll have a blast. Good that they'll be wearing PFDs since most states require you to wear on if being towed behind a boat by rope.

Tow whatever ya want. We have on occasion, flipped a picnic table upside down and tied that to the back of a boat... And we were sotally tober at the time.....promise......

Picnic table?
When we were younger we would take a rope and make a handle, and tow an old VW hood across the water. All was fine till someone finally got enough money to buy a real boat, with enough power to make it dangerous. The hood ride worked fine until you got dragged at high speed through shallow water and ate mud.

We'd tie a short piece of rope to the front of the hood for a hand to lean back on, and tie the hood off to it's handle or through a hole at the point. The only bad part was that the hood was a goner if it broke free of the rope, we lost a half dozen or so in the river over the years, and a few got smashed out of shape on stumps too. Those were really daring would get towed through the lily pads and marsh areas where you couldn't see the stumps in the weeds. Somehow no one ever got hurt. The most common 'life preserver' was an inner tube around your waste or what ever was in the boat when you bought it. Thinking back on it, I'd venture to guess that half the gang back then weren't even good swimmers. Its amazing we all survived I guess, but things like beer were more important back then than a life vest. These days they'd probably write us all tickets.

Reminds me of my life in the mountains growing up. We would be in the snow behind a 4x4 on basically anything that was slick... and sometimes not so slick?! Mailboxes and dry spot were usually our concerns there!!!

I spent all my childhood years tubing behind a boat on a regular black truck tube. only problem is it will chaf you on the under sides of your arms, after riding awhile. Those fancy tubes with covers and handles didn't come out until I was old enough to have my own kids.

Re: ghetto tubing

agree with others. if ya can ride it, do it... just wear your pfd.

in my younger years we did odd things too. our favorite was a small 2 man Styrofoam sailboat that had become dysfunctional as a sail boat. pretty much only the hull left. it worked great. it was mostly uncontrollable and the removable centerboard slot made for some interesting cleaning.. the faster ya'd go, the more water would come up the slot. until the sailboat hull planed.. then the slot was out of the water till it bounced a little. high pressure gushers would come through intermittently.:eek:. in the end. we finally broke it in half one day. rode the back half for a while then disposed of it... we sure got good use (our moneys worth) out of that sailboat.

we also did real inner tubes. like the previous poster said. tubes like there are today were not available. not invented yet. i tried a dish draining pan once too. it worked well till i fell off. the drain pan didn't float, :(

Pulling a tube might be a good way to finally tear that old transom off of that old Dodge boat.

I suggest you go fishing instead.

I also started with the truck tube; even though I used 2" straps (from a lawn chair) it still stretched out like a sausage. The chafing was so bad we wore wet suits--had to anyway for the jellyfish (stinging nettles).
Wake boards? it was called "free boarding" and it was a surf board and a ski rope.
The crucial point for dragging anything, even the new tubes, is to get up on a plane, and not submarine. the rider needs to shift weight to help with this, also the spotter in the boat.

who needs water sports when ya can have fun skippering your boat and putting your skippering skills to test.... ;)...

take that with a grain of salt. don't want ya to go out and sink your boat or drown yourself... ;)

When I was a kid my dad and his friends all had plywood "saucers". They were a 48" round "saucer" that you would ride at a slow speed. You sat towards the back, (off center), so the front would not catch water. It was all fine UNTIL you came off of it, and the "saucer" came back and hit you in the head !!!

Go to 100 Acre Cove in Barrington that's where everybody goes to water ski and tube. It's always absolutely GLASS in there. I'm actually going there to go do some tubing myself today with some of my buddies.
