I have a boat project, that I'd love to get my son involved with, however he just wants to go boating. He has no interest in even helping to fix, much less to learn HOW to fix.

Any ideas?

Limit use of the boat to those who contribute.

My 9 yr old isnt much help either, but he is a darn good "gofer". I let him play until I need a gofer job, get him to do it, then he goes back to playing.

He doesnt have much interest in learning yet, but I hope this will change as he ages.

Ken

Find a job to do/problem to solve and pretend you have no idea how to solve it. Look helpless and take a break. Come back after twice the time you think it would have taken you and most of the time you'll find your problem solved and your son with a big smile to boot. My son (27) is on to me now, but at the time he fell for it hook line and sinker :D

Get him involved in simple things that are within his ability and you know he will be able to do. Nothing more discouraging than not being able to do what you are asked. He will certainly not want to help then. Assign him his "own" set of tools he can use. Involve him in decision making and make sure you can use some of his ideas. Any dissassembly/demolition to be done ? My boys loved that part of it. Just keep a close eye on them and provide them with the proper safety gear (gloves, goggles, ear plugs etc).

How i got my son into it was to just get him to help for short periods
of time, sometime's just a minute. And before i knew it he's daddy's little helper asking for his own tools.
