Getting lower unit back on.

I have replaced the water pump in my 70's Mercury 115 hp, in line 6 "Tower of Power". I have everything back together a few times but had some other issues which are now fixed. I get the motor to within 1 inch of going back but something won't let it slide all the way in. Any tricks out there?

When you get it up as far as it will go, are you reaching up and rotating the flywheel to line up with the driveshaft splines?

Check out this thread, I think you'll find that it's hanging up on the shift shaft alignment and this will help you with your problem:
