Re: Gel coat crack

An ol guy called them screws "Phersons" .. whatever the name is called..its the installation .. ;) ..

Ive seen the Proper bits used for them called " Reed and Prince " .. They are NOT your normal Phillips Drivers. Stripping the heads of these screws are a real PITA to get out of glass when trying to remove them.

Thats why I suggest you get the proper bit for the screw head..you dont want to use a drill driver for those. You can possibly create too much heat breaking the head off. Do it BY HAND.

The drivers are Very Pointy at the end and Should be used with them Brass screws .. Just FYI ..

Take'm out and replace with SS IMO ..

YD.

PS. I am responding because I know ONE snapped off head can lead to a 1 hour Rub Rail job becoming a 2 hour grind/fill/refit job ;) ..

PSS. You guys didnt catch this ;)

Re: Gel coat crack

I appreciate all of the help that you guys have been giving me. I have another question. Yesterday when i was out on the water i took the engine cover off and noticed water dripping into the bilge coming from the outdrive. Today I looked at the outdrive on the outside of the transom and noticed a small gap about the width of a piece of paper. I filled it with marine caulking. What could cause this? I was worried that there might be a problem with the transom. I tapped the transom from the outside of the boat and also from the inside where I could get to it and everything sounded fine. I also felt around with my finger when i was replacing the drain plug and it didn't feel like there was any rot. Is this something that I need to be concerned about? The old owner that I bought the boat from had all of the service records of the boat since it was new and he had the outdrive serviced every year and I am assuming that the shop would inspect the transom. I have only owned the boat for 3 weeks and this is my first boat. I am not sure that the water was coming in from the gap I will see if water is still dripping in next time I take it out.

I also shook on the out drive pretty good and did not notice any flex on the transom.
