Troubleshooting Question: 115HP Evinrude, 250 Hours, Excellent engine; yesterday accelerating to get on plane, suddenly the engine slipped out-of-gear. RPMs increased but no power at the prop. At slow speed, and above idle speed prop is spinning providing forward power. (The prop has not spun off the gear shaft). Any suggestions on trouble shooting this problem. Could it be the gear shift cable, a failing shift mechanism, etc. or worse case is it the lower end unit? Would seem if it was the lower end unit it wouldn't have any forward propulsion at lower speeds, though. Not sure. Pls advise on best next steps.

Almost certainly a spun prop hub. Get her re-hubbed at a prop shop.

Good luck. :)

Thank you...it would appear from similar postings about the symptoms of a "spun prop" this is what happened. Appreciate the information.

a re-placement rubber bush is pressed into the prop, doesn't cost much or take long,
it's easier to replace a bush than a shaft iffen ya hit something nasty etc etc,
they do wear out,
