trying the potatoes in a trashcan trick this year. We've done in the raised garden last couple years just take a lot of room and ripen so late we really can't replace with anything else. But I'm going to try turnips this fall so we'll see. Anyway, first layer of extra - interwebs have all sorts of material to use but the neighbor has 30 or so bales of at least 10 year old straw so i'm going to try that method.

I spent last week in Tampa; a buddy form my forum has his mom in the hospital. So when we got on the boat, twice, we were about twice as close tot he hospital should something go wrong. Plus he had been up over 36 hours stressign before I got down there. There are trees in the background so I'll qualify it for the gardening thread.

ok a couple fun ones.

lower right is the aforementioned celery plant.
Lower left is a parsley plant that I kept alive all winter by placing right next to the furnace exhaust.
Upper left is some more pickle cukes
Upper right is two Tabasco plants. I did just one last year, I think I need two this year since I'm going to make pepper relish and some chow chow fomr the cauliflower.

We have two of these, and they are just fun but never know

Sweet potatoes plus onions; three each bucket. I planted them for looks but if we get something in the fall so be it.

ok. The big garden outside the fence has corn, squash, sunflower, okra and zuccinni in it - all from seed. Not much to see just yet but spent yesterday had scraping to kill off the crab grass that wants to take over.

Any tips on growing corn? I am in Oregon and we have planted it a few times but can't get it to grow.

Redneck Joe, you can always dry that rosemary and strip the dried leaves and save them in an old spice jar. Then use the stems on the smoker or grill.

Are you planting a single row or multiple shorter rows? It does better in multiples. Also, you may want to pull a soil sample. Corn is a heavy feeder and is picky about soil ph.

I am planting in multiple. The soil has the proper ph and is fresh compost mixed with earth.

Heavy nitrogen in early stages then general 10 10 10 at about knee high. This is only my second year on corn, not too many good sweet ears last year but i let the crabgrass get out of control, i think it took the nutrients

That was my plan hate to waste in but it needs trimming

Joe, I tried to plant a seed on the porch but had problems getting beyond the first step. We had a good crop of arugula this year.

nice salad the other night

baby French radishes. A bit less spicy and they grow long not fat. I'm going to try and pickle some see what happens

Pairs well with leftovers of this:

Great thread. Nice looking salad r n j.
I was thinking about this thread last evening while working in our small front garden. Unfortunately, got too dark for pics - but my question is this...

What is your definition of a weed? Mine is different than the Admirals - I tend to leave decent looking vegetation until I have an opportunity to replace it, especially if it has some flowers, is holding down the soil, and is kept under control. My definition is simple, it's "unwanted vegetation" - and I get to decide what is wanted.
