I am looking for feedback and tips on how to get my garage more organized.

Right now, I have a dilemma where I have more tools than space to put them. Yeah, its not a Horrible problem, but it is still a problem. I received $75 worth of gift certificates for Christmas to the local Menards (Basically a Home Depot for those who don't know) and I'm going to put that money towards organizing my garage space.

Right now, I have about 10 feet of workbench up against the back wall of my garage. The benches I built have storage underneath for larger tools like circular saws and such. I currently have a smaller 4-drawer Craftsman toolbox that I use to put some of my tools in.

How do you guys organize your screwdrivers, sockets, wrenches, etc? Should I just go out and buy a second toolbox? Problem with that is it takes up more space on my workbench.

Sean

Re: Garage Organization

Hey EE, I attached a short(width of bench) piece of thin angle after drilling some holes in it for my screwdrivers.
Works for me and saves space.
Do you have any pegboard or a place to hang a piece?
Perfect for putting sockets on and a nail or a screw is good for hanging your wrenches on.
Like I said, works for me.

In a toll around craftsman 16 drawer tool box.
If you had come by while going to NOrleans I would have given you a complete wall tool board (Peg Board type) made by SK Wayne. (I think) Display board out of parts store. it wouldnt have been but 400mi. out of the way. :D

Re: Garage Organization

Just do what my kids do with my tools; leave them all over the garage floor, the lawn, the porch, the patio, the patio cover, the hill behind the house, the street, the sidewalk, the neighbor's lawn etc. etc. etc. You need a lot less space this way . . .

Re: Garage Organization

My workbench is up against the back wall of my garage, which currently has exposed studs. I could probably hang a piece of something on the studs and do what you suggested SBN. What is it that you put on the wall? What is "thin angle?"

Hmm.. never thought about the pegboard. What do you hang the sockets on the pegboard with?

Sean

Re: Garage Organization

The answer is so simple!

BIGGER SHOP.

For my screwdrivers, I took a peice of 2x4 that had a little over 1/2 inch ripped off of one side. I drilled holes in this and stuck my screwdrivers in it then screwed it to the wall.

Sockets on the wall, get the cheap socket rail holders from Sears. Drill a hole in each end and mount them wherever.

Menards has laundry cabinets fairly cheap. These are small wood cabinets to go over the washer and dryer. Mount these above the bench and work area. They are less than $100.

I have lots of shelves. A 4x8 osb makes 24 feet of 16" shelves. You can store a lot of junk on the back wall above the bench. As far as hand tools (wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers, etc) get a bigger tool box. Sears always has their stackable units on sell relatively cheaply.

Or you can always get one of these for more space-

Re: Garage Organization

EE.....all you do is get a socket holder and screw it to the peg board.
Just google "socket holders" You can get them at any hardware store.

Today I went and bought a new wrench because it was easier than searching the garage/yard for the old one. :D

Re: Garage Organization

Damn you ee, and Ron!! All this talk of organization got me to feeling guilty. I may just take on my own “space reclamation” project this weekend. I need to make sure I’ve got "room" incase ee takes me up on my offer. :)

Re: Garage Organization

This must be a joke I've spent over 30 years trying to organize my garages, from bigger tool boxes to peg board to cabinets to selves to the floor to the rafters, you get the drift,Bottom line is when you think you have it organized and step back make sure you take a picture because thats the last time you will ever see it like that :D :D

" How do you guys organize your screwdrivers, sockets, wrenches, etc? Should I just go out and buy a second toolbox? Problem with that is it takes up more space on my workbench. "

I like to keep a set of basic hand tools hanging within an arms reach from my work bench. I hate peg board though because the damn hooks keep falling out. I prefer to build a small shelf on the back of my bench and hang my tools from that with nails. I also drill holes through the shelf to hold my screw drivers.

Re: Garage Organization

LMAO - LT.. I'm trying to RETAIN my tools, not give them away. But thanks for the offer!

OMC - I can understand what you are talking about when it comes to the hooks falling out all the time. But, I think I might end up taking that route anyway. I don't use my tools that often in that I am more interested in having them nice and organized than I am the occasional PITA I'd experience from the hooks falling off.

As for everyone who feels guilty about how their garage looks... I'm thinking even though I have trashed garage - it's probably still looking better than yours right now. So go out and CLEAN IT UP!!!

Sean
