Re: Funny "TLC needed" boat ads on Craigslist.

I had a couple of terrible experiences on Craigslist as well. One time, I drove 2 hours to see a 20ft wellcraft and the guy gave me the wrong directions. After sending me on a wild goose chase, he finally answered my call and got me there. As I pulled up, he was handing the title over to a woman and counting her 100 dollar bills. I got fed up and bought a brand new 15ft Saturn inflatable boat for $1499. I couldn't be happier!

A 15 foot inflatable is a world of difference from a 20 foot wellcraft! How'd you go from one to the other?

I?m guilty of being a Craig?s list junkie too, this week I logged over 500 miles driving around looking for that special boat, and I know better too. It?s an addiction that can pay dividends. I looked at a Spectrum ?angler? which is a decent middle of the road fishing boat. The flags were everywhere that should have told me this was not as advertised. I kept hanging on to the dream that it might be the cream puff I hoped for. Here is the ad:

Up for sale is a deep v open bow fishing and pleasure boat. I installed powerpak 3-bank charging system. It has 3 brand new marine batteries, 5 swivel seats. 107lb 36v trolling motor 2 fish finders, and electric 35lb anchor. I have down riggers that come with the boat. The engine is a 90hp Force. It has a 7' beam and tons of storage.. It has power/tilt and trim however one of the tilt cylinder's seal needs to be replaced. Tires are good shape along with trailer. There is a canopy with windows, service manual and extra prop, that come with the boat . Any questions you can call me at 219-405-0505
Will be willing to trade

So I take a half day off and gas up the truck to see this boat with potential. 250 miles later I pull in and this thing is sitting outside, and it looked like it had sat outside all winter too(later confirmed it always sat outside). Interior was trashed beyond, rotten floor and transom, seats were after market newer trashed out junk. The motor (Force 90) was beat to ***** with no water coming out of the weep hole, the lower unit was loose to the upper (you could see it wobble when lifted/lowered by the leaky cylinder. He had clear bath tub caulk on two bolt holes on the engine, he claimed it came that way so he never did anything. All gauges were busted. He had some home made down riggers that were rusted out scrap metal which were mine to take if I purchased. (they mounted to a 1x6 that was screwed to the gunnels.
He had a $700.00- 10 year old trolling motor bolted to the front of it; any electric anchor bolted off the side towards the back, the prop had been polished, chipped up and banged bad. Trailer was beat to death, but it did have newer tires. Thinking about it now, I deserve everything that happened to me and all I can do is laugh.
Ended up buying my neighbors boat last night and it?s a very nice Spectrum as well.

drove 4 hours to see a pristine dual console dauntless only to find a beater. It had never seen a cover of any kind. Every hinge was broken, the rub rails was held on by not more than 10 sheetwall screws, none of the gauges worked, spider cracks everywhere. It definitely could have cleaned up nice, but there was no way I was bringing that home...

and yes, I found my current boat not 2 miles from my house for the same money, and it was newer.

moral of the story, ask for LOTS of pictures before making the trip. And always be prepared to walk away.

You drove 250 miles to look at a boat with a force outboard?
I have made some "bummer" trips too.. Once to go look at a 20ft IMP.. Had the dadgum 470 in it.. Oh yeah he was trying to sell me on it.. The fella had a fortune tied up in the boat too.. New transom and such.. It was a huge thing.. It needed a 350

Y'know, if you are going to put up a picture, clean out the pine needles and make it presentable, especially if you are asking more than 3 digits in cash.

Exactly! I've looked at so many - loaded with cones, needles, brush - maybe I should be thinkin about taking up forestry....lol.

Anybody who is an avid boater, takes care of his rig. He knows someday he'll upgrade, so why not keep it in decent shape. The others - well a few that I have run across feel insulted when I smirk and make a mad dash for the truck.

Every fall when I winterize my old worn boat I clean it out pretty good. Then when I uncover it in the spring I'm allways surprised how many leaves got in there in the day I spent winterizing. What seems clean in the fall is a mess by my summer standards.

When I see a boat pictured with any leaves in them I just feel it shows as neglect. It's kind of like how you should look at a persons house and property condition to get an idea of how they maintain there possesions when you go to buy something.

I think people have the impression that boats are built to be in the water, so they should be able to handle sitting outside with no protection...A convertible car with the top down has as much chance as a boat does sitting in the same spot with nature making it its home people!

Almost every line is a contradiction!

17' overall length, adjustable, tilts
1-7/8" hitch, 2-3/8" axle, 1" spindle, 8 leaf spring, good cond. (look at the picture!!!)
13" tires, dry rot, will hold air
tail lights, good cond., don't work
rollers O.K., will need new glides
winch and cable, good cond., stiff from age :rolleyes:
