I have a 1963 Johnson 40hp outboard motor that ran good until I ran out of gas, then it would not restart after refilling the tank. It sat over night and then when I tried to start it again it fired up for a minute but gas starting coming out of the carbuerator then the motor stalled. I pulled the plugs out and checked them, there was spark, disconnected the fuel line and turned the motor over until it cleaned itself out. Reconnected the spark plugs and it started, ran good until I hooked the fuel hose back in the motor and it started pouring out gas again from the carbuerator. It seems like it keeps flooding itself out. Do you have any suggestions?

yann235,

Your first outing was a gift from the old outboard gods.

Your second will require some maintenance. Your carburetor is now clogged with the sediment of the ages.

It will require a full disassembly and a new kit. You can still get those from your local John/Rude dealer.

Re: fuel problem

Float needle not seating properly maybe. This causes the gas level in carb bowl to be too high causing excessive gas. When you ran it out of gas the float in the carb would have gone to the bottom of its swing possibly causing it to get stuck in the open position. Tap the carb on the side lightly you might get lucky. Could be float not properly adjusted. Look in manual for proper setting.
