Re: fuel or ignition problem

Your 1979 ignition system uses two packs. That can be helpful when troubleshooting ignition problems-which you are currently doing. It should be as reliable as the newer ignition systems. Your pack part number indictes it is an unlimited power pack-most today will limit rpm's to 5800. Unless you locate an old pack of this same part number, most replacements will be rpm limiting at 5800. I'd recheck your compression numbers with another gauge. They are extremely high for an OMC V6. Usually compression is in the 95-100 lb range unless it has high compression heads-then it will be slightly higher.

Crap, sorry about the compression numbers I meant,
Compression readings are top star board is 70 and all the rest are 80-85.
Are these compression ratio's acceptable. I was told the the cylinder with 70 is usually the one the runs hotter.
I got my used pak in the mail so I will try it Saturday.

Re: fuel or ignition problem

Got on the water Saturday with the new/used power pak and that was it. Made a few changes at the lake with what little I know about sycronizing every thing whis is not much. Got the idle close, 700-800 rpms, gets on plane decent but could only get about 4800 rpms out of it. It appears I'm not getting full throttle, looks like at full throttle the carbs are at 3/4 open. I did not push it very much since all of this could be timing so didn't want to take a chance of burning a piston. Is this something I can do by myself or should I still take it in to a licensed mechanic.
