Well seeing how the problem is fixed bud there's about as much chance of my boat starting on fire as yours.
Also, it's quite a common problem. I bet 50% of kicker boats with portable fuel cans have some type of leak. Especially like the open vent, hot summer day, full tank of gas. Open air, non smoker probably ok.....leaking tank in an enclosed space.....different issue.

We used to replace the wee o-ring in the fitting.-----Today folks just go out and buy a new hose / bulb assembly.-----Spend $50 instead of $1.00.
Race,

If you blow up the picture of the fitting, it appears to me that his plastic is all deformed. When you were replacing o-rings, even the plastic back then was better!!

I have found that when the fitting starts leaking the hose is getting bad anyway. No sense chasing one problem after another..

Especially when ethanol chews everything up so quickly. Even the ethanol resistant stuff eventually succumbs.

The more we have to replace, the more profit the company makes. Years back I was involved in the design of a new product, was quite surprised to see a designer whose expertise was designed life expectency of the product !!!

I suppose they were telling the engineers...."no, that's TOO good, make it crappier"

It is all about expected lifespan. They try to estimate what a reasonable life expectancy should be....for example that fitting should last 5-6 years then expect to replace it. We could make it last forever but the public will be happy with 5 years so we can use plastic at a cheap price. We could make it from SS and make it rebuildable at a higher cost....but now consider mfgr cost and what will the public expect and accept. Yes things can be overbuilt but will that represent good value in the eyes if the public if the price is high. There is actually courses and degrees that people take and get to get into this field !!

Because the people have learned to accept that. We would rather accept cheap junk than to not have it at all !! Believe it or not, these are things these types of engineers work thru and think about....big companies pay big bucks for engineers to figure this crap out, I know I was quite surprised !!!
