Fuel injector plastic tip fell into intake hole... now what?

Hi all,

2005 Volvo Penta 5.0 GXI-E, was doing what I thought was an easy injector change out (was having laggy performance) when one of the plastic tips and the o-ring stayed behind in the hole, I pulled the o-ring out and the plastic tip fell IN... darn it... now what, I can't see it, it is in in the Front right side, as facing the engine, (number 1 I think). So can I leave it down there (will the engine just eat it), do I have to pull the intake, the heads... what to do...

Can you stick something in with a bit of tape with sticky side exposed and see if you can get it out?
I couldn't see it with a bore scope, didn't really want to take the time to go fishing and end up with more stuck down there, like a piece of tape. I mean it is a small block chevy, I would think it would chew up a little piece of plastic and spit it out. I am going to take the first couple of plugs out and turn it over a few times, maybe it will eject it out of the spark plug hole. Probably need to disconnect the coil so it doesn't start... I don't know on the 5.0 GXI if putting to full throttle will kill the fuel also... like a fuel injected car, that would be good to know. I guess I could disconnect the fuel pump...

Might be able to vacuum it out with shop vacuum.

Also does yours have a fuel damper on the fuel rail… looks like a fuel regulator.

Might be able to open the damper up and use it as a clean out spot.

That is what I thought (and wanted to hear, so I will run with it) 😁

If it were your motor, would you just fire it up like it never happened, or would you try to blow the plastic ring out somehow, like taking the spark plug out and cranking - with the coil disconnected? It was only the plastic ring that holds the washer on.

The “new” injectors were rebuilt volvo penta parts, over-sprayed with red paint and all. Exactly same part with a lab sheet. So hopefully they will do the job. It was eBay, looked like someone was parting out a motor.

There is no such thing as rebuilt injectors in the marine world. Just look at the injector it has a steel casing and someone is going to unpress (if that is a word) the casing. Remove all the parts, clean replace components, not going to happen.

What they are in most cases are ones that were cleaned up used ones and repainted with new gaskets. If it was my motor I would have my original injectors cleaned and flow tested by someone who knows what they are doing like Smitty's in MI

I hope I'm wrong

I'd go with the shop vac idea. Rig up a small diameter tube to the nozzle and make sure the tubing is long enough that if it drops off it won't also disappear down the hole.

Ebay shows Delco OEM that have to be counterfeit. I reported one to Ebay and they say its authentic. https://www.ebay.com/itm/134839457260 - 8 for $125.00

You are correct, I shorthanded "rebuilt" on the phone for the injectors, they were cleaned, leak tested, pattern checked, static and dynamic flow tested, with new orings etc. It was a company out of Glenville Ny, I can PM the name if someone wants it. The injectors are the same bosh PN that came out of mine and have the same VP overspray red, they were out of a 2007 5.0 GXI, I have a 2005 5.0 GXI.

So, IF I wanted to crank the motor without starting it to try and push the plastic ring out of the spark plug hole, what would be the safest way (for me and the boat) to do that. I assume unplug the fuel pump, should I also unplug the coil, or is just leaving the plug wire loose on the bottom of the boat good enough? I think putting the throttle full also stops the fuel system - probably not the pump, but the injectors? Just thinking I would crank it over for 10 seconds with the plug out of cylinder that was under the injector that lost the plastic ring...

You could do all that if desired but definitely add water so you don't start to damage the water pump impeller while cranking.

Thing is with opening the throttle is that different manufactures, engine models, / ECM's all have different throttle percentage settings of going into Clear Flood Mode....Some are 25%, some are 50%, A bit more are 75% and even a bit more are 100% all with about 5% fluctuation allowances....

You'd be surprised at how many TPS don't actually achieve full 100% at wide open throttle when looking at the live date of a scan tool...Usually ends up anywhere in the low to high 90's...

Usually, you'd have to look in either the owner's manual or the correct service manual to try and locate the right percentage info....

Or have a noid light tester that fits your injector wiring plug connector and watch to see when the light stops flashing as you open the throttle and cranking the engine over.

All that mentioned on the percentage ranges, in doing some searching it appears yours ought to be at 100%.

Ah, yes, thanks for that, I would have forgotten about the impeller.. note to self, add water..

LS injectors are pretty cheap. But those are not correct for a marine engine

part # on side of injector is identical to whats in my 5.0 gxi. Whats different between gm's part# in '07 and today ... what makes it marine
