Fuel Gauge Stopped Working on my Boat

I have two fuel tanks and one fuel gauge. I had a short that melted my ground wire to the fuel gauge. I have replaced the fuel gauge and a new switch that controls the two fuel tanks, but the fuel gauge will not work. Do I need to the ground wire to the two fuel tanks? What do you think I need to do to fix the problem? Now can I test the ground wire? I am stuck at this point.

The fuel tank should never have a hot wire anywhere near it

A green bonding wire, a black ground wire, and a pink signal wire to the gauge ( variable ground)

I would look to see what short melted the wire and fix the issue

Do you know what caused the short and have you fixed it?

If you melted the gauge and the switch, there is a good chance are you damaged the sending unit in the process.
