Fuel flow gauge

I’m wanting to add a fuel flow gauge on a 1998 Johnson 200 in order to see and accurately track how many gallons per hour I’m burning to get the most mileage out of my boat when fishing offshore.

How would I accomplish this and does anyone have any hardware in mind?

I have 2004 Aquasport 205 osprey, thank you in advance!

Not sure on the equipment but I can tell you how to run....if your in a hurry (bite is on) and the water allows the speed, go full bore and back off 10%.

All other times no more than 60%.

I rarely honor the second thing!

if you have a garmin that is NMEA 2000 compliant, you can get their fuel flow meter to connect to that. it goes in-line between the motor and the fuel tank

Running a gfs-10 on my Garmin network.

Turns out, not so useful as I had thought.
Fuel burn is pretty constant between cruise (4200) and WOT at 1.9 mpg. It’s a better indicator of the conditions than a tool to maximize fuel burn to a specific rpm

My 115 E-tec had the I-Command tach. Wot it was at a little over 11 gallons an hour but at 10% back or so it was under 8.

Quite sizable really. I learned by have that page up I would run slower. Without the page up if say...."aah, who cares.

Wow, so these things really are that bad on fuel hahaha, thats the real reason I wanted one is so I could really adjust trim and maximize fuel economy. Looks like 20mph is about what I need to run out offshore.

Not really useful…the hull will tell you when you’re trimmed and running at the sweet spot.

Fuel flow simply provides feedback on my range for the day

FWIW: the single increase in fuel economy came from a prop change. Went from a SS 4 blade to a 3 blade prop. Gained 10% in efficiency

Looks like 20mph is about what I need to run out offshore.

How did you come up with this number?

It varies by hull, but my best cruise is 27 knots (31 mph). Roughly 1 hour, 20 minutes (40 miles) to the fishing grounds for me

How much is the extra 80 minutes on the fishing grounds worth to you?

A whole lot more than the roughly $20 in fuel I would have saved at 20 mph
