I have a 40 HP Force engine about a 1992/93 model year. I start it and back it out of boat slip. Run it all around lake and when I bring it in to slip I put it in neatral nd it races to beat all. When I put it in forward or reverse. I can control the idle but I am afraid it will break off the shear pin. It will idle fine when I start it and let it idle in the slip but when I run it and put it back in neutral .it runs away with itself any suggestions???????

Re: Froce motor races in neutral ..........

Welcome to iboats, Max.

It could be;
Fishing line wrapped-around the prop shaft,
a lower unit gear siezing-up,
a cylinder not firing --- runs fine witohut any load.
Linkage misadjustment, or too much play in the control cable.

Also, an outboard with carbon build-up inside the combustion chambers can ignite, glowing like charcoal. When it does this, the engine will "run-away" like a diesel without a governor.
This condition can be surface when the buildup is heavy, and esspecially when the cooling system is not functioning 100%. Decarb the engine and replace the impeller if it is 2 seasons or more old.
Decarb and replace plugs afterwards, every 80 hours, or every 40 hours if you idle most of the time.
