Forward Gear Problem

I have a 1989 40hp evinrude and when i took it out today i had trouble with it going forward after i had been pulling a tube for a while. This is the first time i have pulled a tube. After i let the motor set and cool it would start going and i noticed that when it was in forward every so often it i would feal a sudden jurk.

Likely bad clutch dog and fwd gear.

If i take out the clutch dog and foward gear. Will it have alot of wear on the gear or clutch dog that you can tell that it is the problem. Or is there any other idea's that might cause this problem

Dog and gear wear may not be noticable to an inexperienced eye. Not very likely another fault causing what you described, unless someone has messed with the shift cable adjustment. It possible that's all that's needed. Try getting the cable trunion under the hood properly adjusted 1st.

Just took out shaft and looked at foward and reverse gear and the clucth dog and both gears looked fine but the clucth dog had a little wear on it. The only thing i was wonding about is the clearance between the shaft and reverse gear and also foward gear. Cause reverse i noticed it does not have a bushing in the gear like foward and has alot more play between the shaft and ID of reverse gear. I have a manual and i don't see that reverse has a bushing and is this play what is causeing the problem.

The wear you should be looking for is slight rounding of the dog contact face and the mating gear recesses at the edges. Very unlikely your problem has anything at all to do with reverse gear, since the dog isn't even touching it in fwd. I guess it's always possible someone had the gearcase apart and didn't reassemble it correctly.

You can always look at the parts diagram for your motor on BRP's website to verify parts are correct for your LU and in the right places.
