I have a 1994 40 hp johnson. I have put three sets of gears in it. The original set tore up one day going dwn the lake. Next I took the foot apart and got all the metal out and didn;t see any bearings are anything bad. I installed a new set twice more and they both stripped out after a few hours of runnin. I do'n know whats wrong with it,but, our local boat shop wants four hours labor at 95 dollars and are wanting me to pay double the price what I can get the gears for. Can someone help me. thanks brent

Were the gears shimmed correctly using the factory special tool and gauges?

Who did the work?

Were they OEM gears installed by the dealer who can give a 1 year warranty on the parts?

A bent or mis-aligned gearcase can also cause gear damage. Is the skeg bent or chipped or is there any marks on the gearcase?

Everything Seahorse posted is correct, I myself would lean toward a warped case. They have a gearcase tool to check if housing(V-6) is warped but dont know if they have one to do that small of a engine.
