I switched to a pertronix ignition and have went through 2. I want to go back to points . Any suggestions on wich distributer to buy

Mallory sold their marine distributor business to Sierra. However a Mallory or prestolite would be my recommendation

You can't use automotive distributors in a marine application

Sure the advamce curve will not be the same, but in an engine running at hign revs, it does not advanc the timing
They are J1171 compliant so you don't blow up
What's going to blow up exactly? The cap is a tight fit and not vented.

I suggest you start researching col reg 33 sub part I

You obviously do not understand J1171 or mechanical advance or marine requirements

I will tell you that the Holley distributor for my IH 392 Palmer marinized engine, is the same as the one used in truck engines. There was no difference. Maybe a Delco that has a metal window shutter to adjust dwell could be considered not sealed.

AND for an engine in a car running at high revs and load, there is little vacuum signal to move a vacuum advance diaphragm, the distributor will not experience full advance. Same happens in a boat engine. The only advance will be with the centrifugal weights.

Distributors for marine applications are what is called ignition protected. You will find the alternator and starter are also ignition protected as well as the ventilation blowers. J1171 certifies that there cannot be a spark to cause ignition in the bilge..

Remember that gas vapors collect in the bilge, as the vapors are heavier than air that’s the only place they can go. So the blowers pull the contaminated air out of the bilge… but sparks and gas vapors don’t end well so it’s kind of important to ensure nobody blows up their boat


This isn’t even counting that a marine engine is running up hill 100% of the time and the advance curve is different than a car

You still do not understand the requirements and laws for a marine motor
