I have a 1990 Maxum with a 120 hp force L-drive. We had to replace the pistons and rings recently. When we purchased the boat last October we couldnt take it in the water and we were sold a boat that didnt really go in the water. Apparently the person that we bought it from got it hot and hence the new pistons and rings. We have taken it back on the water and it will only get up to 4000 rmp , the first time we took it out we adj the timing and the second it was about 5200 rmp but it seems to get less and less. We have adjusted the carbs and the timing and maybe that is our problem. Then we think that maybe we need a new prop but it was faster before with the same prop. It will only go about 25-26 mph we can barely pull one person on a tube at 8 mph. We are at a loss and about ready to pull the plug and sink it. We dont know why it is that way. We dont know what to do to fix the problem. Please help us! And no one in Utah will work on the L-drive because it is to costly and time consuming. Go figure just our luck.

Re: force120hp low rpms

Welcome to iboats.

Don't feel too bad.

Finding a mechanic that will work on an l-drive , is nearly impossible - nationwide.

Many people have fell victim to the l-drive.

Could be many things, need to narrow it down.
Start with the basics.
Compression, spark, fuel delivery.

If the comp is 120# on all 4,the guage is probably not reading right.
Do a spark test,is timing set right? Then start looking at your fuel system.Bad ball, weak fuel pump, loose connections, water in the tank. Start digging.Jerry

Re: force120hp low rpms

The exhaust hose is cracked all the way through and I was wondering what kind of problems if any that would cause? I am going to replace it tomarrow but I wasnt sure if there was any way that would cause any problems...
I have not checked the spark but I did put a new squeeze ball on it last year, We havent even ran a whole tank of gas through the boat since we did the new pistons, so I dont know if the rings have seeded yet and maybe that is why the compression is low.
