force trigger or flywheel?

Hi all, Im new to this forum and also my 1985 85hp force ouboard.

Hope someone might have an answer to my question.

I have a 15ft bayliner capri with a 1985 85hp force. My problem is that it has no spark. I noticed that the stator had very low ohm's so i replaced it and now have about 700 ohm's and 168 volts AC output on all wire pairs but still no spark. I tested the output of the stator and got only about .002 volts on all pairs of wires. The problem is that im not sure if this is caused by week magnets in the flywheel or the trigger is bad. I did get 49 ohm's on all three trigger pairs so im leaning towards the flywheel. I have cleaned and sanded off all rust areas on the flywheel with no affect. The magnets will pull a screw driver tip to it well

Any suggestions about this would be a great help.

Re: force trigger or flywheel?

No spark on all cylinders is too much of a coincidence. If this is the case, the first thing to check is the kill switch. Does it have a kill switch on the dash or in the control box? If so, is the clip in?

Second: remove the white wires from the engine terminal board near the starter and insulate them. White and blue is the stop circuit. If you now have spark, the problem is NOT the coils, CD boxes, triggers, or stator. It will be in the blue and white circuit.

Third: check to be sure there is a ground wire from the electronics mounting plate to the bypass cover. If this ground is poor or missing, a no spark condition can occur.

Re: force trigger or flywheel?

Hi Frank, Thank you for your suggestions.

I do not have a clip type kill switch, just a key that turns once for accessories and then turn more to start. Also can push in for choke.

I did try removing the 2 white wires and when turning over still no spark. I have a new battery, new starter, clean fuel with filter inline, new plugs, new stator and 1 new CDI black box. When i removed the flywheel i clean the magnets for both the stator and trigger. That did not help.

Im thinking about replacing the flywheel and trigger as to eliminate both of them as the culprit. peak voltage out of the trigger is only .002 volts on any of the trigger wires, but not sure if that is caused by weak magnets on the flywheel or just a bad trigger.

MY 2 CENTS

According to all I know, all small boats with "large engines" have to have a kill switch. My 1984 with an 85 HP has one on the lower right side of the dash.
Small red button, maybe white, I think, if the clip is pulled off off for some reason.
I once got up after shutting mine off, and it was still on my life jacket the next outing. :)

Anyway, I would be surprised if your boat did not have one.

Good Luck.

Re: force trigger or flywheel?

Maybe that's why i could not get the horn to work, maybe its not a horn button but a kill switch instead. I will check it out closer and see if it has a place like a big c-clip would go. The only thing on the lower right side of my dash is a push in button like a horn would have.

Is that what it looks like on the clip part that you insert, a c-clip? or is it like a key that you insert and it pulls out that way if you get knocked out of the boat.

Thank you for your suggestion.
