Force 70Hp 1991 gear problem

[Paddle all day]

Hi, I have a 1991 70Hp Force outboard. Replaced water pump, now when I select forward gear all is fine. On selecting reverse will not go into gear.
If I pull back on the controls reverse will go in, but at high revs.
could the linkage on the lower unit have turned out when I removed the coter pin putting it out of sync.
What is the best way to address this problem.

Did you remove the screw on the side of the nose cone?
There's a drain plug and then the gear shift arm pin.
If you removed the pin??? then the lower probably needs
to broken down and the shift assy. reassembled on the prop
shaft. .

Just changing the impeller shouldn't change the shift??

You can try: unhooking the linkage, shift the shift rod through
the gears F N R and end up in N
Then shift the shifter the same and end up in N
There's a connector on the shift rod. You adjust the trunion
to match the rods.

Thanks for your reply. No I didn’t remove the gear shift pin. I used the method you stated, but in a slightly different way. Started engine in neutral, selected revers, and adjusted the trunnions nut til it went into reverse, just need to fine tune it a little, but think it’s just about thei.

Line up neutral on both and that should work.

Good morning... I had the same issue... but I did take that bolt out... after tring to figure out what was wrong... I took the entire assembly apart and i figured out that it was a mistake... I also have two small parts that I can't figure out where they go... I have attached a picture of them... if anyone can help me with this I would greatly appreciate it...

You should start your own thread and state what year and model/ HP your motor is. Having said that, the "U" shaped part is the shift yoke, and the other part is the pin that the yoke sits on. If my memory serves me right, I believe your pin might be broken. For some reason, I thought that it was supposed to be longer, but I may be wrong. Part# 53 is the yoke, and 52 is the pin in the attached diagram.

pnwboat is right about the pin being broken, looks real short.
Year/HP/Model???
Depending on the year? the pics should work??
The pic below, #7 and #8
7 rides on #8 and stay's in place with a bit of Assembly Grease.
The grease melts/dissolves quickly and the gear oil lubes it after that.
