Force 50hp Pees with throttle, but not at idle????? Help Needed.

When I got the motor it would run but not idle or cool(no water out of the exhaust).

I've since got it to idle and added a tell-tale to let me know it is peeing/cooling. However when it's running at idle it won't pee, but if I give it a little throttle it will pee out the exhaust great and the tell-tale looks like a water faucet.

It has a brand new water pump, but I did have to use the old shaft seal due to the new one I order not fitting in the new water pump I bought. It could probably still use a new water pump plate, but it's not in bad enough shape that it would harm the impeller.

Any ideas or help would be much appreciated. I've yet to get the boat on the water due to the motor issues.

If you are using muffs then they often give water issues ...personally I would not worry until you get it in the lake where I am sure it will pump like mad ....of course your idle could be too low

Hi Jay

Something I have had happen to my motor is the tube seal getting pushed up the copper tub when installing the lower unit. If the lower unit is not lined up with the motor the water pump and the seal does not line up. The outlet of the water pump forces the seal too high up the tube and there is a gap between the seal and the water pump. Last time I fitted the lower unit I fitted the seal as low as I could on the copper tube . I then used the water pump to force the seal on when I lifted the lower unit up Just make sure you keep the lower unit lined up (Left or right) as you lift it.

It could also be the case that the seal is just to worn out to seal properly.

As fucawi says it could be the muffs.

I'm running to motor in a 55 gal drum.

I'm going to drop the lower unit again and inspect the impeller/water pump/wear plate/seals/etc.

I'll keep yall posted.

well yes in a 55 g drim should pump ok..make sure its low enouh 4 in above the anti ventilation plate .. all the pumps I have seen have the pipe to pump seal on the pump ..??? one trick is to put about 4 in of pipe /plastic /hose over the inlet to the pump to guide the pipe into the pump.
If its pumping good above idle I dont think the pipe is out but the seal displaced is possible

What do you mean by seal displaced or a better question which seal are you referencing too.
