Force 40 HP questions

Hello to all this is my first post here...I sure will apppreciate the help from everyone. Does my 1998 Force 40 HP have any type of choke on it? The guy I bought it from told me that he choked it by taking off the motor cover and holding his cupped hand over the air intake for the carb. When I first started it after sitting for about 3 months I had to do this also and it cranked right up. This is a two man operation because you can't start it and do this also... haha. Someone else I know told me if you push in the button on the throttle control under the lever this acts as a choke too...I thought that button was for revving up the throttle in neutral without having to put it in gear? Am I just missing the choke or was this motor actually made without one?...and can I install one if it doesn't have a choke? Thanks for any responses...

Hi, welcome to iboats and the world of Force outboards.<br /><br />Your motor Has a choke, sort of.<br />It has what is called a fuel enrichment valve, or a fuel primer.<br /><br />It has a a small solenoid actuated valve the opens and pumps fuel directly into the intake manafold, just behind the carb.<br />So rather than restricting the air, you are increasing the amount of fuel.<br /><br />The valve is activated by pushing in on the ignition key.<br /><br />So, for a cold start:<br />Open the fuel tank vent if you have a portable fuel tank.<br />Squeeze the fuel line bulb till firm.<br />Activate the throttle only button on the control handle and push the throttle halfway forward.<br />Push in on the key to activate the "choke".<br />Turn the key to the start position.<br />After 5 seconds, release the choke so as not to flood the engine.<br />If it will not start after 5 seconds, apply choke again for a few seconds.<br /><br />When the engine fires, release the key and pull the throttle back to the idle position.<br /><br />On a warm start, you will not need to advance the throttle, and may not need to use the choke at all.<br /><br />Once you do it a few times, you will learn just how much your motor needs to be choked.<br /><br />Happy boating.
